“The Admiral: Roaring Currents” – the Korean historical movie had already achieved great success in its domestic release making it one of the highest grossing movies in Korea. But now it appears that international fans, namely the U.S, are enjoying the film as well. It has already become the most successful Korean movie in the U.S, taking the name away from “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring.”
But what, perhaps, is the most interesting is the fact that “The Admiral” opened in only 32 theaters nationwide compared to “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring” which opened in 160 theaters.
By the numbers (so far):
“The Admiral: Roaring Currents” $687,000 total U.S earnings in 32 theaters
“Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… Spring” $357,495 total U.S earnings in 160 theaters
The movie is based on the actions of legendary Admiral Yi Sun Shin when his fleet of 12 ships defeated a Japanese armada of over 300 ships during the Japanese invasions of Korea between 1592 to 1598. Not bad for a guy who had no Naval experience when he took command. This battle is one of the most notable Naval victories in maritime history.
