The creative director of ‘18 Feet and Rising‘, is also a professional Psy impersonator. He has become so successful, that he has transformed that into an alter-ego, Teddy Kim.
Based in Sydney, Derrick Kim is now weeks away from releasing his debut single under his alter-ego. He is very confident in it’s success with domestic and international fans. He said his personal had come from the lack of K-Pop locally, and that it was for, “young Australian K-Pop Fans.” He hopes that it will cause people to look to Australia for this type of music, and to collaborate with artists such as Will.i.am and of course, Psy.
He is currently busy with his side career as a professional Psy impersonator, originally called Syp. At first, it was just a casual appearance for client, Korean Tourism, which he did for a, “good laugh”. Since then, he has been in high demand from his native Australia and several international brands. Kim performed “Gangnam Style” at an EYEcrowd party for a professional US baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, for over 5,000 people. He also has over 144,000 ‘Likes’ on Facebook.
Even though he has removed Syp from the spotlight, Derrick Kim will keep performing as his new persona. He plans to debut Teddy Kim’s debut single, “Colourman” sometime in mid-May via YouTube and iTunes. He wrote the track, choreographed and produced the music video.
Fame aside, he doesn’t plan on quitting his day job any time soon. According to Derrick Kim, “Advertising has been my passion for more than a decade,” he said. “It’s part of what I do now, not all I do. I enjoy being a creative in an office – it’s strangely soothing – and a performer on stage. It’s like living two different lives. But if my music career becomes too big then I’ll have to sit down and think hard about it.”
