It was reported that the court shortened Go Young Wook‘s sentence from 5 years in jail to 2 years and 6 months, giving him the minimum sentence.
The artist has been sentenced for sexually assaulting 3 minors, as young as 13 years of age, a total of 5 times between July 2010 to December 2012.
The Seoul High Court stated, “The original 5-year prison sentence was reduced to 2-and-a-half years. The period that his personal records will be made public has also been reduced from 7 to 5 years, and the original sentence of 10 years of electronic anklet wear will be reduced to 3 years.”
Out of three cases in the appeal, the court found Go Young Wook guilty of one. Before he decided to appeal, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 10 years of electronic anklet wear as well as having his record made public for 7 years.
During the appeal session, which was held back on August 28th, the victims did not appear, and Young Wook’s lawyer commented saying, “There are many contradictions in A’s testimony. The prosecution misconceives the real relationship [between the victims and defendant], so we ask for the defendant to receive a non-guilty verdict.”
Additionally, the court took into consideration the fact that Go Young Wook, after insisting that he is not guilty, decided to deeply reflect by writing a letter.
Some netizens did not hide their dissatisfaction with the court’s decision, commenting, “Are they crazy? Do celebrities get discounts now?” “How lucky to be a celebrity. Translating manga lands you in jail for five years while sexually assaulting a minor only gets you two years and six months,” “Korea is the best country for criminals to live in,” and more.
What do you think of the situation?
