Fans are familiar and love how Jason Chen and Clara C strut their stuff on YouTube, but you can never guess how impressive these talented artists are performing live till you’ve been to one!
The two had their Singapore showcase in Zouk on the night of July 27th. Since this wasn’t their first time performing in Singapore, they were familiar with the environment and shined on stage. Both Clara and Jason immersed fans with their breathtaking live vocals and great song numbers – with each performing 10 songs no less.
Even before show time, Clara and Jason were all smiles but already working hard on stage, where all fans got to meet their favorite artists up close and personal for photo taking.
The opening act was a string of performances by aspiring local and Malaysian artists. In particular, the dynamic dance performance by local dance group, Climax, definitely enlivened the atmosphere with their energetic choreography, including covers of some KPOP routines.
Hitting the stage next was Singaporean Singer-Songwriter, Nick Yeo (姚俊羽). Based in Taiwan, and known for his OST songs of a popular Singapore drama serial, Nick performed a few of his new mandarin ballads, including “势在必得” and “就这样”.
Teasing the crowd, the emcee emerged when everyone were waiting in great anticipation for Clara. A quick exchange with the audience revealed that fans arrived as early as 12 noon. Supporters hailed from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, China and some, all the way from Seattle!
And the songs that fans want to hear? Many called out their favorite tracks enthusiastically, and we picked up a few from the loudest – “Heartstrings”, “Offbeat” and “Eventually”.
Eventually, the wait is over! Dressed in cheerful hues, Clara stepped on stage with her treasured guitar marked with interesting décor.
“Hi, I’m Clara. How are you? I freaking love Singapore!” the Korean-American greeted the excited fans who reciprocated with heart-shaped hand gestures and a loud “I love you Clara!”
Filling the stage with her energy, she got fans to help start off her first song “Heartstrings”, from her debut album ‘The Art In My Heart’. Next song, as Clara puts it, is for all the girls – “You’ve Got It All”. Apart from the undeniable great vocals, Clara’s professionalism as a live performer truly shone when technical problems popped up with the sound system. Clara handled the situation with ease as she continued to engage the audience. Finally, with a cheery “Are we good here?!” Clara continued the show.
What followed were great songs such as “The Camel Song” from her 1st album, ‘Wanting What I Need‘, Quesadilla and False Start from her latest album est. Clara even did a cover of the hip-pop funk – “Thrift Shop“, by American rapper Macklemore and his producer Ryan Lewis.
Most of her songs portray a story of her own. Like for the song, “Wanting What I Need“, Clara quipped, “You know how people always want what another person has? You got small eyes, you want bigger ones; you got big eyes, you want smaller ones; you got curls you want straight and straights want curls…”
Clara continued, “I’m thankful for what I have. I stopped wanting and focus on what I need – my friends and family… and Laksa!” evoking laughter and cheers all around. An awesome song with an awesome beat, everyone immersed in the great atmosphere.
And to the super enthusiastic bunch of fans near the stage – Clara called out, “You guys are my favorite! Can you guys fly back with me to LA or something!?”
Ending her performance with one of her newest songs, “Fish“, Clara shared how her ex-boyfriend did not want her to do music which got fans went crazy, and she said, “Who are you to tell me what to do? I don’t sing for you, I sing for myself!”
“There is always someone out there for you after As*hole Number 1, Douchebag Number 2″, Clara went on, “You will always be able to find your ‘fish’ in the sea.”
Continuing the night, there were great waves of cheers from fans as Jason took the stage. The amiable 23-year-old really wowed the crowd as he displayed his strong vocals throughout the night.
Starting with one of his originals, “Hide and Seek“, from his newest album ‘Never for Nothing‘, Jason went on to perform some of his favorite songs, including Brian McKnight’s “Back At One” from the 90s, and Bruno Mars’s “When I Was Your Man’.
Many hands shot up when Jason asked, “Who were with me at Hard Rock Café in March?” Thanking his fans for their undying support, Jason sang another one of his latest songs, “Thank You“.
The bilingual Taiwanese-American also did an amazing cover of the hit songs from two of the greatest Mandopop singers – Lee Hom‘s “Something You Don’t Know” (你不知道的事) and David Tao’s “Just a Friend” (普通朋友). There were plenty of moments where all audience were engrossed in the song that no one talks, swaying to the music, and having their eyes on stage throughout the night as Jason serenaded the crowd.
Fans were in great anticipation as Jason introduced his newest songs – Unexpectedly – which has never been performed before. “I am a careful person,” Jason shared, “but love is different, you never know what is going to happen“. Singapore fans are truly blessed.
Jason chose the lead single,”Best Friend“, from his album ‘Gravity‘ as the last song, but instead ended the great night by throwing and pampering fans with the hefty merchandises he had prepared.
Both Clara and Jason had their Instagram moments to capture the excitement of the showcase. Check out their Instagrams if you got too curious!
