So us writers here at Officially KMusic were chatting the other day and we decided we wanted to bring our readers a new segment! Often when we are chatting amongst ourselves we start discussing different points of views on certain aspects of K-Pop and as you can well imagine we don’t always agree.
So in honor of those discussions, once a week, we will be bringing a question to you, our readers, to have you weight in on from now on. Sometimes the question might be light, as in the one for this article, and sometimes it might be on the more serious side. We hope you’ll enjoy this segment and participate in the comment section. You can be sure you will see some of the other writers and editors commenting weighing in with their point of view!
So lets get this party started!
I was watching the teasers for Super Junior M‘s latest comeback when all of a sudden I noticed something a little different. I wasn’t sure at first what it was I had seen and actually thought it was just the lighting from the set. So I paused the video, rewound it and let it play again, in slow motion.
Sure enough there it was, right above Siwon‘s lip…a moustache!
Well I’ll be honest, I giggled! Its not the best look I’ve ever seen on him and the slow motion wink I was on the receiving end of kind of put it over the top. Now this isn’t Siwon’s first time sporting facial hair, oh no, he’s uploaded a few selcas where he was either wearing a moustache or even a full on 5 o’clock shadow.
He isn’t even the first Super Junior member to share the rugged look with their fans. Both Heechul and Shindong gave the scruffy look a go.
Even on hiatus Super Junior member Kim Kibum has jumped on the facial hair band wagon.
It’s hard to say if they pull it off or not, it does make them look older, not to much so, but definitely more mature. Maybe it’s because I’m from Canada and I’m use to big scruffy beards that I tend to find these little tiny moustaches and beards giggle worthy. If your going to grow hair on your face, grow some hair!
Well maybe not that much, lol!
One of the first idols to sport facial hair for promotions and probably one of the ones who had said facial hair talked about the most was MBLAQ member G.O. Of course it was probably partial to the fact that when the group debut, what was to become G.O’s signature look, was firmly in place.
During there debut promotions almost every show that MBLAQ went on the MCs would almost always comment on G.O’s facial hair and how it made him look so much older than his group mates. It was a big deal when he shaved it off finally!
For most of use seeing our idols with facial hair always comes as a surprise. Possibly because of the age of most of our idols, some of them have debuted as young as 15, and possibly because the K-Pop music industry is such a youth driven organization, our idols don’t really want to look older than they really are. Or well their labels don’t want them too!
Of course it also just could be the fact that the stages between going from having no facial hair to a respectable moustache or goatee doesn’t always tend to be attractive. The 5 o’clock shadow is one thing and we often get a quick peak at our idols sporting said scruff after arriving at the airport after a long flight or when our idols have gotten a couple days of down time. But unfortunately once that shadow reaches 10 and 12 o’clock it starts to look scraggly before it looks good. Pretty hard to image an idol with a scraggly beard!
We also sometimes get treated to some facial hair due to the persona of a character our idols take on in the dramas they do. Especially the historical pieces! I still cannot get over how popular, apparently, it was to have a moustache and goatee in olden days in Korea! Sometimes the facial hair is their own but most of the time it’s from the hard work of the makeup crew that we get a glimpse at what our idols would look like with a moustache, beard or both! And of course our idols have to share these fun looks with their fans even prior to displaying them in front of the cameras. Can you tell in the pictures below which ones are real and which ones are fake?
In closing it’s a toss up if our idols should try out a stash or not! Some of them can pull it off and some can’t, but that’s the same that can be side of anyone really. Sometimes it’s not the moustache that’s the problem but the style they choose! It’s really hard for anyone to pull off the pencil thin moustache and that seems what most of our idols go for, someone really does need to take them aside and let them know that it doesn’t really work. Here are a few more fantastic photos of idols sporting the scruff. Don’t forget to let us know what you think about idols with facial hair in the comments. Who was your favorite from the ones I shared? Did I miss someone with amazing facial hair?
