Roy Kim has been deciding whether to continue making music in Korea or to go back to school in the States. He made his decision to leave Korea towards the end of August to return to the U.S. and Georgetown University for the time being, for there is a possibility that his enrollment at the school may no longer stay valid if he postpones his return. Regarding this and the rumors that suggested that he was choosing to go back to school due to the recent plagiarism accusations, the singer held an interview to open up about his plans and assure fans that he doesn’t plan to give up music at all.
During an interview, Roy Kim shared, “After getting accepted into college last year, I applied for a leave of absence to participate in ‘Superstar K4’. During the press conference for the finale of ‘Superstar K4‘ on November 24th, 2012, I stated, ‘I will never quit my studies. But that doesn’t mean, I will quit music.’ My thoughts haven’t changed since then.”
“To be honest, I wanted to pursue music ever since I was little, but in my 20 years, I’ve spent more time on my studies as a student than the time I pursued music. As time passed, I realized that I want to continue to go to school and see how far I can go. In order to get accepted into Georgetown University, I studied vigorously and I don’t think that I should quit school altogether just because of my ambition to do music.”
He continued, “I believe that if I study music and carry out my studies simultaneously, I think that I will be able to figure out what suits me the best. [Leaving to go back to the U.S.] is not because of another reason nor is it a decision I made out of the blue. Although I discussed with the school about if I could delay my return, there is a possibility that I won’t be able to continue to be on a leave of absence. I think I may be returning to school by the second-half of the year at the earliest.”
On his ambitions as an artist, he said, “My debut single, ‘Spring Spring Spring‘, as well as all of the other tracks in my 1st full-length album are special to me. Since I wrote and composed all of the songs, it is hard to pick just one song as my favorite… In the future, I also want to try genres of music that I’ve never tried before. As a singer, it is meaningful and exciting to take on various genres. But if it is a genre that doesn’t suit me than I will have to reconsider it.”
