On March 29th, WINNER’s KANG SEUNG YOON released the MV for his solo debut title track, ‘IYAH’. Debuting in 2014, the leader-turned-main-vocalist dipped his feet into acting as well, gaining roles in various Korean dramas such as MBC’s ‘High Kick 3’, TVN’s ‘Prison Playbook’ and most recently in 2020 starring a main role in MBC’s fantasy thriller, ‘Kairos’. Seven years down, the artist has put his down penning all the tracks in this first studio album, ‘Page’. Check out the MV for its title track down below!
The rock ballad talks deeply about how everything on the outside is not as it seems. That although people look fine and successful on the exterior, inside we are still children who make mistakes and deal with their own personal struggles as time passes on. The singer’s slightly nasal vocal tone cooes this emotional and truthful message effectively, even adding a choir like bridge and soaring belts as if to send out hope to everyone managing their own problems. Its instrumental matches the atmosphere with a heavy solid drum beat and guitar to add texture and brightness to the stirring song.
Watching the music video, we see the artist reflecting upon himself. Opening inside his residence, he happily looks through his child photo album. Walking around, he finds and picks up his guitar as it cuts to a backstage scene of his group’s concert. Fellow member and rapper MINO opens the curtains finishing his solo performance as he passes the mic to the vocalist patting his back for good measure. Apprehensive and getting into the right mindset, the artist composes himself, entering the stage to show a stellar confident performance to the crowd. However once the performance wraps up, he sits alone pondering in the dressing room as he returns to his private self. Cutting between shots of the YG Entertainment group member of his younger self with the journey to purchase and play said guitar, and his current self, he finds himself walking through a dark alley, heading towards a light. Tunneling at the end, he finds freedom to express however he feels on the stage and on the beachfront next to the wide ocean. The final clip touchingly shows the audition tape of the songwriter with his guitar for the eventual company he would debut under.
His accompanied full album contains a total of 12 tracks with collaborations with aforementioned WINNER member MINO, rappers WONSTEIN and SIMON DOMINIC as well as a version of the title track with a feature from veteran singer-songwriter YOON JONG SHIN. A day after release, it has topped the iTunes album charts in 18 countries with the title track reaching #4 on the popular Genie Music Chart.
