One of the biggest awards shows to wrap up an amazing year in music is the Seoul Music Awards. This year they were held on January 14th and celebrated everything the Korean music industry has to offer.
Hosted by Honey Lee, Jun HyunMoo, and EXID’s Hani, the SMAs took place at the Olympics Gymnastics Arena at Olympic Park in Seoul and was jam packed with amazing fashion on the red carpet, fantastic performances, and exciting wins.
Some of the surprising wins this year was given to Pledis Entertainment’s rookie group, Seventeen. Though they had not snagged any end of the year awards so far, they did take home one of the three Newcomers Award along with YG Entertainment’s iKON and Source Music’s GFriend. A deserving win for all those who received it.
EXO set records for being the first kpop group to accept the Daesang Award (Grand Prize) three years in a row. They also received a Bonsang Award (Main Prize) which was one amazing birthday present for member, Kai, who shared the day with the award ceremony.
Not able to accept his award was JunSu who won the Popularity Award. JYJ has been a group banned from network television for some time, but despite this hurdle, fans still love and adore the members. It was also stated that his acceptance of the award would not be aired due to wanting to concentrate on the main award categories. His girlfriend, Hani, had some sweet words to say about him during the show and JunSu reached out to fans through Twitter to apologize and thank them for his award.
One of the other surprising wins of the evening went to veteran SM Entertainment soloist, BoA. She swept in between BIGBANG and EXO to take home the award for Best Album of the Year with ‘Kiss My Lips’. BoA just celebrated her 15 years in the industry and doesn’t show any means of slowing down. When accepting the award she said, “It was very difficult to produce the entire album, but I learned a lot and I was very happy. Thank you for such a meaningful award.”
BIGBANG did not come to the award show to accept their Best Digital Song Award for ‘Bang Bang Bang’. iKON’s leader, B.I. received the award on their behalf. At this moment, BIGBANG is still touring and working on completely their ‘MADE’ album.

Personally I was happy to see who had received awards this year. This is also VIXX’s third year in a row winning the Bonsang Award as well and all groups were so deserving of all these awards. 2015 will be a hard year to beat in amazing music. I look forward to 2016 and congratulations to everyone on their wins!
