Who Is Girls Generation? (INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE WARNING)

Who Is Girls Generation? (INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE WARNING)

YouTube hosted its first music awards on November 1, Sunday. While controversial rapper, Eminen, won Artist of the Year, South Korean pop group Girls’ Generation won YTMA Video of the Year!
The award was based on metrics such as views, likes, and comments over the past year. Girls’ Generation’s winning video “I Got a Boy,” which was uploaded last December, has over 74 million views, over 400,000 likes, and nearly a half a million comments. “I Got a Boy” beat the offerings of international artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus. That’s some stiff competition, and too the whole Korean Pop community  Girls’ Generation’s win is a big deal.

There has been much attention given to the fact that Girl’s Generation, a K-Pop group, was the first to win the award, and gives hope that K-Pop could potentially rise as a leading genre worldwide. Sadly, the losing fandoms didn’t take too kindly to seeing their idols being beaten by an Asian act, and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations with a string of disgusting racist tweets. Following up to a major clash of the fandoms. Where SONES desperately tried to defend their girls. The only thing they accomplished was showing their ignorance to the online world, not to mention making the artists they were “defending” look bad in the process. Even the so-called “professional YouTubers” over at AwesomenessTV made ignorant comments in one of their recap videos, that led to the vapid trio removing the video in question after receiving a swift backlash from Girls’ Generation fans.

One of the more sophisticated tweets send that night.

At least this fan knew the difference between Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

And again, Korean Pop will always be under estimated. It seems like the majority of the fans of the other nominees don’t believe that there is music made outside of America. Almost 95% of the backlash tweets, Facebook and Tumblr post were saying that the girls would be better of staying on there own side of the planet. Fun fact, Tiffany, who actually accepted the award on behalf of Girl’s Generation, was born and raised in California. That’s in America.

It seems that the fans seem to have forgotten that the winner was going to be decided by official social media shares of a special version of the nominated video, and the “I Got a Boy” clip had roughly triple the amount that the rest did, so the victory wasn’t actually much of a surprise to anyone who had been paying attention to the voting process.

Not really a surprise indeed. One fan on Tumblr described this very accurately during the clash of the fandoms: “It’s pretty much that the kpop fandoms are like siblings and if another fandom picks on our siblings then everything goes crazy. Only siblings can fight with siblings”.
