Henry Bloomfield has released a delightful and charming ode to pretty teachers called “Ms. Mary“! Anyone who has had an attractive teacher can relate to this idea and if you’ve not experienced this, then I am deeply sorry for you. For us international fans, a song in English, particularly a K-Indie song, is a rare gift. When that song is as fun, upbeat and adorable as this one is, it is a special day.
After a few measures of this song, I knew it was a good one. There is something so light and fun and happy about it, I couldn’t help but smile. It has a sound that I can’t place in any one genre, at times the way the music and Henry Bloomfield’s smooth voice blend together has an almost big-band style sound to it though it is certainly lacking the cheese-factor that a lot of songs like that possess. And the video, it is so adorable and so funny, I had to stop several times to back it up because I was laughing so hard. There is something so endearing about watching Henry and the other obviously grown men in the video act like children in a classroom. The chorus is the part in Korean and I find no flaw in his pronunciation or usage.
There are people who will complain about there not being enough Korean in the song or some other silly complaint. I believe that this song could very well be an artist testing the waters of a new market. If that’s the case, this is a good test. This song is just what we need right now – light, fun, relevant, high-quality songs that help us forget the bad things happening. It is so important that we as K-Pop fans are welcoming of all new acts and judge them on their skills as artists, not any other criteria. We all complain about how K-Pop is not well received by our friends and family, let alone by the places most of us international fans live. We need to live the change we wish to see in other people and we can start by giving talented acts like Henry Bloomfield an honest chance.
