Yim Jae Bum is a veteran soloist who has earned the title of the King of OST. His voice is unique, and his ballads are touching. He is an incredibly successful singer, so that is why we could not forget him during our KMusic Male Soloist Week.
Even though some sources say that Yim Jae Bum, also spelled as Lim Jae Bum, was born on October 30th, 1963, he actually was born on October 14th, 1962. The difference is a result of some complicated situations that occured at the time of his birth. His father, Yim Taekgeun, was a legendary and practically the first ever announcer in Korean broadcasting history.
His childhood and the environment he grew up in, were very complicated and made a big impact on his career and behavior, so that is why it is important to mention the, sometimes painful, past. His father first married a university professor of music with whom he wanted to have a child, but they unfortunatly were not able to. He eventually got envolved with a woman outside his marriage with whom he conceived Yim Jae Bum. Even though it has never been confirmed, it is rumored that his mother was a famous female folk singer. Yim Jae Bum’s parents left him at an orphanage where he spent his early years. His father eventually decided to bring him home, but never paid too much attention nor did he give Jae Bum much love. It was actually his grandmother who took care of him most of the time. This painful past resulted in Jae Bum’s moody personality and developed his love for music from a very early age.
Yim Jae Bum debuted on March 1st, 1986, as a member of the very first Korean heavy metal band Sinawe. In 1987, Yim Jae Bum left the group to begin his military service. When he was released from the army, he teamed up with members from Boohwal, Daasut Son Garak, and Sohn Moohyun to form Wayin Budae. Soon after they released their first album, they broke up, which made Jae Bum frustrated to the point he decided to leave the music industry and not be active for a while. It was the first time he had ever done so.
He came back in 1989 with a new band called Baekdoosan, and released a project album “Rock in Korea” for which he worked with members from Sinae, Wayin Budae, Baekdoosan, H20, Charisma, and with two American musicians as well. He has also worked with such groups as Asiana and Rock in Korea.
He only started releasing solo albums in 1991 and has had large gaps between albums. Releasing the next one in 1997 and than one in 1998 followed by a 2 year hiatus till 2000. It was 2004 before he made another comeback and his last solo comeback was back in 2011. He is currently signed under LOEN TREE.
If we were to list his most popular songs, we would have to start the list with “Confession,” which is said to be one of the most difficult songs to sing at karaoke.
Another song that can be considered a Yim Jae Bum trademark that is incredibly popular would be “For You” which was released in 2000, and is said to have open the artist’s solo career path.
In 2013, Yim Jae Bum paired up with ALi and they released “I Love You,” which received a lot of attention from fans. Their powerful voices matched perfectly together, making the song a masterpiece.
As mentioned before, Yim Jae Bum can be called the King of OST. He has lent his voice for such Korean dramas and movies as “Pain,” “Jang Ok Jung,” “Inspiring Generation,” “Slave Hunters,” “City Hunter,” and much more.
Lim Jae Bum is happily married to actress Song Nam Young, with whom he has a daughter Yim Ji Soo, and a son whose name has never been revealed.
