‘MAL.MO.E: The Secret Mission‘ was the final film showed at KOFFIA 2019.

Director: Eom Yuna

Cast: Yoo Hae-jin, Yoon Kye-sang, Kim Hong-pa

Genre: Drama

‘MAL.MO.E: The Secret Mission‘ is based on the true story of how the Korean Language Society produced the Korean dictionary during and after World War 2. At a time when Korea was colonised by Japan, the nation had to dispose of their national identity so that they could assimilate themselves into the Japanese empire. This includes the Korean language and dialects.

The Korean Language Society, who comprise of the main characters of the film, do everything they can to preserve their language by collecting words with the aim of making a full dictionary. They have spent 10 years doing so – their effort and dedication are inspiring. However, they are in danger of being caught by the Japanese. The tension and suspense because of this will have you at the edge of your seat. The sacrifice that the society members go through just to preserve what little national identity they have left is admirable. They risk everything for this greater cause.

‘MAL.MO.E: The Secret Mission‘ has just the right amount of comedic, dramatic and emotional moments. The main character has two young children, and his love for them is so bittersweet to witness. His youngest daughter is absolutely adorable and every time she appears on the screen, everyone just coos at her. The two main characters, who start off on a bad note, have amazing character development and they end up as comrades and friends. The relationships in this film are beautifully executed. This film teaches how important words and language are in society. Its beautiful message will resonate with you.
