PSY has been added to the ranks of YG artists branching out and managing their own labels. This past June, we saw the award winning musician registering the label and making the formation of PSYG official.
PSYG, a combination of both “PSY” and “YG,” will become yet another sub-label added under the YG Entertainment banner alongside Tablo‘s HIGHGRND and Teddy & Kush‘s THE BLACK LABEL.
Back in 2012, PSY jumped to worldwide stardom with his single “Gangnam Style.” The single won multiple awards and achieved “most viewed” status on YouTube with 2.6 billion views, a title the music video still holds as of August 2016. Additionally, the lyrics “Oppa Gangnam Style” was entered into The Yale Book Of Quotations as most popular quote of 2012. With the success of the track and achievement of multiple Guinness world records, PSY essentially became the first K-pop star to break out into the more mainstream western music scene. His track “Gentleman” also followed with multiple awards.
Since his rise to fame, PSY has continued producing hits like “Daddy” and hopes to expand the genres of music he produces with this new label of his. YG sub-labels: HIGHGRND and The Black Label had been doing quite well on their own with artists like Hyukoh and Zion.T signed to respective labels. Following this, PSYG is expected to do equally as well, especially being headed up by a veteran artist such as PSY.
After achieving his life long dream, it will exciting to see the artists and types of music that PSYG produces. If the uniqueness of its founder is anything to go by, we can expect some lively and catchy hits from the label very soon.
