On Friday, May 13th, Northwestern University in Evanston, IL’s Ryan Auditorium filled up with more than 600 attendees from all over the Midwest and East coast. R&B artist, DΞΔN came to light up the show for Northwestern KASA’s themed event ‘Seoul Mates.’ As the lights dimmed, the crowd cheered, and the SOLD-OUT show began. It started with Global Pungmul Institute’s youth pungmul ensemble, SoriBeat. Pungmul [풍물] is a traditional Korean folk music performance art that combines drumming, singing, and dancing. It has been a part of the ‘UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages‘ list since 2014. The performance’s beat definitely kept the audience hyped.
Northwestern’s student dance group, Fusion Dance Company, then, swept the stage and enchanted the audience with their synchronized, powerful, and slick dance moves.
Proceeding, Northwestern KASA members bewitched the crowd with their rap skills and angelic voices as they covered various Korean songs including Geeks’ [긱스] ‘Officially Missing You’ and Ra.D’s ‘I’m in Love.’
After, various Northwestern KASA members appeared on stage and performed original choreography to various K-Pop songs including ones from iKon and AOA.
After a short intermission, Northwestern University’s NU Taekwando club took the stage and wowed the audience into a standing ovation as they performed intricate moves and jumps—including jumping over eight people that are crouched on the floor.
DΞΔN was the last performer for the night, but before he started the show, the Executive Board of KASA came out and asked everyone if they wanted to come closer to the stage. Without hesitation, almost everyone rushed in with screams to be closer to the stage.
DΞΔN came out to the mic stand with the first song, ‘Put My Hands On You’ and performed other fan favorite songs like ‘Pour Up’, ‘Bonnie & Clyde’—where he took off his jacket, and ‘21’—to which he did a few body rolls thus making the crowd go even more wild for him. And last but not least for the encore, he ended with his English single ‘I’m Not Sorry.’
During one of his performances, he asked his fans, “do you guys know this song,” and one of the fans exclaimed, “I know every song!”—making him smile a bit and respond with, “prove it!” Obviously, he wasn’t disappointed as the fans sang along from start to finish and ended the show with fans falling even more in love with him.
After the show, eleven lucky fans who won the random raffle and each of their one friends got to go backstage to take a photo with DΞΔN!
This was a very spectacular show that showcased various contemporary and traditional performance arts interlaced with Korean elements. DΞΔN definitely showcased exactly why he is one of the most sought after Korean artists in the United States!
