Now that the confetti has cleared and the fan boying / fan girling is over, it is time to take a look back at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards aka MAMA‘s. The red carpet did a good job setting fans up for the main awards show to begin in cased you missed it you can check out all the performances here and learn more about the fashion and the who’s who.
The MC for the event was the handsome veteran actor Song Seung Heon.
Setting the bar high the opening act was a hip hop collaboration featuring rookie Bobby (iKon) and veteran artists Dok2, The Quiett, Masta Wu. The special project group performed both “YGGR” and “Come Here“. “Come Here” is part of the highly hyped YG Hip Hop Project 2 getting the audience and viewers moving right from the start.
Not going to be out done the ladies were up next to show they too could bring the set was titled “Last Fantasy.” When power house vocalist Ailee joined forces the lovely Girls’ Day. It stated as a mature and sexy dance routine then at the end we saw that none other then Ailee was one of the “male” dancers. Girl’s Day then quickly picked up performing their hit “Something.” There is a confidence I think that gets lost in the music video that can only been seen when you watch the song preformed live. The crowd agree it was obvious from the cheering and the expressions on their faces (thanks to the crowd shots) that everyone was mesmerized by this performance.
Ailee has said interviews that she is a fan of Beyoncé, was evident when she performed “Don’t Touch Me.” She always puts on good live show but she had just a little something extra this time around. From the slow breakdown in the beginning she was just as sexy and fierce as her musical role model.
The stage went black for a third time when the sounds of saxophone filled the air, when Ailee and Girl’s Day joined forces with their cover of “Problem” originally done by Ariana Grande. The words mature, sexy , confidence get thrown around a lot not just in this article but other places too. But it is true in this case the ladies commanded the stage during the entire 9 minute and 50 second set.
“Beyond The Screen” was the next set . Up first was super rookie group Winner preforming “Empty“. These guys always do a good job live I guess all that extra time we had to wait for their debut really did pay off. But this performance has to be one of the best ones I have seen from the guys. You could see they really poured everything they had in to this song and it was appreciated. You could tell from all the screaming fans in audience.
The tempo was brought down some as the lovely Yoo Inna took to the stage and sang the opening bars of “Happen Ending” while video of the group Epik High played on the big screen in the background. Allowing Yoo Inna to be the center of attention of the song.
That is until an alarm sounded and smoke raised up Yoo Inna was carried off the stage, literally. I am not going to call any one out but a particular fan boy was just as confused and excited by this as the rest of the audience.
It was time for veteran artists Epik High to take the stage to preform “Born Hater.” They were joined by B.I (iKon) , Mino (Winner), then Bobby made another appearance on the stage as he joined the guys. Before they all went to the end of the stage to “interact” with the idols there. There are some songs that are made to be seen live and this is one of them. The music video does not even begin to do the song any justice.
Next Tiffany of Girls Generation was up she talked some about this years International Artist Award winner (by now we know who he is ) then she introduced Chen from EXO and together they preformed a small section of the song “Green Light.” If you are unfamiliar, it was originally preformed by the next award recipient and international performer 9 time Grammy Award winner John Legend. Then we had some more talking then he preformed another song “All Of Me” , there was even more swooning and fan boying / fan girling going on.
“Memories” IU aka Korea’s little sister and big winner at this year awards was up next she performed an acoustic rendition of “Friday” which is a lot slower then what we had before but it gave us a chance to relax and catch our breath for a second and there is nothing wrong with that. She was joined on the stage Mino (Winner) who took up rapping duties for this song. She sounded and looked great the entire time, but perhaps the best part is a smile would creep across her face. I think it is safe to say she was having a really good time tonight.
We had a little video break in between sets IU talked about memories. In her case, it was her memories of meeting her “seniors” in the industry and those songs that make you stop and give pause.
Next IU paid tribute to the late Shin Hea Chul who passed away earlier this year, she would go on to perform “Good Bye Darling” with an orchestra . She sat in a chair for this song it was evident at time she was really feeling the song . One thing that I like about IU is that she is able to convey her emotions through her voice.
