Idols branching out in to acting is a long running tradition that we here at Officially KMusic wholeheartedly support. No matter how many dramas Yonghwa from CNBlue gets to star in, or how often Hoya and L from Infinite either feature in a drama or blow us away with their performance, we always crave more. There is a seemingly endless supply of idols to fill the rolls in our dramas and we’ve carefully selected 8 that we think should get their chance sooner rather than later.
4minute’s Hyuna
This is almost a no-brainer. Hyuna always captures the audience’s attention with her stage presence but there have been numerous reports that her actual personality is completely different from what we see on stage. A drama would give us the perfect opportunity to appreciate this other side. I think she would be suited for an action drama along the lines of the movie “RED” where she would be the non-combatant in a dangerous situation.
Sistar’s Hyorin
Hyorin has such a bright and unique personality that she would be a joy to watch in a drama. She doesn’t hesitate to make it clear to people that they’re over-stepping her boundaries but every once in a while comes across like the light in her eyes is coming from a hole in the back of her head. Her laugh is genuine and infectious and her ability to turn on her aegyo would make her perfect for a drama along the lines of the movie “Ramen Girl“.
f(x)’s Amber
Amber of f(x) is one of the most well-known and universally loved K-Pop idols ever. Even people who are not fans of f(x) love Amber, follow her on Instagram and generally love everything about her. With her unique style, great sense of humor and general perfection…sorry, I mean likability she would be a perfect addition to any drama. And let’s be honest, after all the terrible androgynous attempts in drama-land, she could not only do a perfect one, she could even do the unthinkable: choose to keep her non-traditional look and still get the guy. Imagining her in a drama along the lines of “Coffee Prince” is pretty close to bliss.
2NE1’s Dara
The fact that 2NE1’s Dara wants to act is no secret. We think it would be a fantastic idea. Dara is perky and adorable with a fantastic sense of humor and she had the role in 2NE1’s “Come Back Home” video to show that she had the ability to act. She has the girl-next-door appeal and would be suited to a drama like “Flower Boy Next Door” or even something more serious like a remake of “Winter Sonata“.
B2ST’s Yoseob
B2ST is one of the bands that we love here. Practically everyone that is involved with Officially KMusic lists B2st as one of their favorite groups. As the lead vocalist and heart of the group, according to his bandmates anyway, Yoseob is always on our radar. He would be ideal for a drama, his almost otherworldly good-looks and incredible presence would make him perfect for a role on the television. He would be uniquely suited for a role in a historical drama or a fantasy.
BTS’ J-Hope
BTS’s most well-recognized goof-ball seems to be made for television. Not only is he incredibly good-looking, he’s incredibly funny and has no trouble acting silly, especially if he thinks it will make people happy. It seems like not one day goes by without a video of him (and usually Jimin) dancing to something or generally acting like silly boys. That kind of carefree, good-humor would suit well to either a comedy along the lines of “Flower Boy Ramen Shop” or to a funny role in a more serious drama like the role of the second other security guard in “The Master’s Sun“.
U-KISS’ Kevin
U-KISS’s resident baby-faced singer Kevin is another idol that we would love to see on the small screen. He delights us with his appearances on Arirang‘s “After School Club” and in every behind-the-scenes video ever shot for U-KISS promotions. He always comes across as a sweet, charming and kind-hearted guy and we all know drama-land needs more of that! He would be really good in a drama where the male lead wasn’t the total jerk-face that they usually are, something like “To the Beautiful You” would be perfect. We would be scared he would get cast as a second male lead since seeing him sad would be more than we could bear.
Verbal Jint
If there was ever a man made for the bad guy that gets reformed, it is Verbal Jint. He’s got a confident air that would help viewers believe that he was a gangster or a heartless businessman but there’s also something about him that also would make his reformation believable. He also would be suited for the gangster in hiding or even the anti-hero. A good role, that wouldn’t involve killing him, would be Master in “Dating Agency: Cyrano“. I for one would believe he was a gangster over Lee Chun Hee any day.
That’s it for our list of idols we’d love to see in dramas. It pretty much doesn’t even matter if the story is silly or implausible, we will happily watch every episode since it’s another opportunity to see our idols. Can you think of anyone we missed? Or a role that would be better suited for anyone on this list? Let us know in the comments below!
