Queen, vocal powerhouse; just a few names used to describe the incredibly talented singer Ailee. Three years after her initial debut, the singer finally released a full length album entitled “Vivid.” The album which was released on September 30th, features a mixture of Ailee’s powerful, spine-chilling, goose bump-inducing voice along with smooth musical accompaniments. The album shows a new side of the singer as the album jacket literally features her ripping through the background, which holds a multiplicity of meanings
Her title track “Mind Your Business” is a upbeat, kick-ass song that features a lover scorned and as they say “hell hath no fury as a woman scorned”. On the 30th the singer released a music video accompaniment for the song which featured her and a group of friends vandalizing what appears to be an ex-boyfriend’s car as well as his house.
Within the video, the singer and crew-mates are caught and subsequently arrested but sometime after, they escape to ‘finish the job.’ The song like the album suggests, is a vivid portrayal of exactly what happens when ‘a girl has had enough’
The album (whose released was delayed due to an injury sustained by the artist) contains 10 tracks, most of which have a ballad-like r&b feel. Excluding the title track, the album reflects the heart-felt emotions of a woman who wishes to express her love as well as bitter regrets of unsaid words.
“Insane” which appears second on the track-list is a pop-based tune, which is perfect for the lyrics as well as the general flow and feel of the song. Besides Ailee’s soothing vocals, the lyrical content ‘hits you right in the feels’ and figurative takes you on an emotional trip, making you want to don a plain white shirt, black shorts and do an interpretive dance piece while simultaneously singing to your lover. It also features a catchy chorus which makes you find yourself humming it in that unexpected moment. Ailee also released a music video for this song which shows the singer singing and dancing from room to room while searching for her lover.
“Symphony” which is a collaboration with Chancellor is play on the word symphony , in which the singers’ masterfully repeat the word ‘symphony’ and then ‘sing for me’ which ingeniously makes this song undeniably incredible.
“Letting Go” is probably one of the most anticipated collaborations of all time. In this song, Ailee collaborates with long time llama best friend Amber of f(x). The pop/r&b song has but a simple meaning – A woman independently ‘letting go’ of a past relationship. Amber’s rap simply completes the song molding it into a beautiful masterpiece.
“Love Recipe” is a jazzy upbeat song in which the singer compares love to sugar and states that all she needs is “…… your sweet love recipe…” This track is nothing but infectious as it gives you the dance bugs because after one listen all you want to do is get up, shake your legs and do endless body rolls.
Most of the tracks on the album were revealed to have been written by the singer. Her company (YMC Entertainment) stated, “Through her last mini-album, Ailee proved her potential as a singer-songwriter, and with this album, she took part in writing and composing the entire album.”
But enough of my talking, check out the album below and get a taste of Ailee’s vivid new style.
