January 5, 2016 – Eunji, Naeun, Namjoo, Hayoung, Chorong, and Bomi of Apink started their North American tour at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Canada. A wave of pink light sticks flooded the venue where the event, hosted by KpopMe, was held. As the lights dimmed, fans drowned in exhilaration while waiting for their favorite idol girl group to enter the stage. Every wink, heart, and flying kiss from the girl group provoked squeals and screams of excitement from the thousands of fans present in the crowd. Beginning the show with one of their classic title tracks, ‘Remember‘, Apink members began to emerge from backstage dressed in white tops and black skirts. Eliciting loud, joyful screams from avid fans, they captured the audience with their powerful vocals and cute dance moves. Ending the song with fervent cheers, they head straight into performing their next song, another one of their classic title tracks, ‘Mr. Chu.’ Fans were already screaming at the sound of the opening instrumental. They continued to impress the audience as they effortlessly belted out high notes and danced in sync.
After the two opening songs, the girls greeted their fans, genuinely conversing with the crowd using simple English words. Naeun had the best English among the group members, helping out the others with their sentences. As the greetings came to an end, the concert proceeded on with the girls performing two more songs, ‘Good Morning Baby‘ and ‘Sunday Monday.’ Screams intensified as main vocalist Eunji sang each high note perfectly.
Right after the two songs ended, an MC and translator came out, telling us that the girls would be doing a Q&A session to answer some of the fan’s questions. When the MC asked them what they like to do during their free time when they don’t have a schedule, Namjoo replied that she prays every morning and night, while Chorong hilariously revealed that she takes her vitamins, because she is getting older. When asked for singing tips, Eunji suggests aspiring singers to practice in the washroom, because she had recently read a research paper stating that doing things in the washroom helps concentration and boosts confidence levels. At “what point in your life did you decide that being a singer was what you wanted?” was another question that was asked. Naeun told the audience that, ever since she was small, she always liked arts and drawing. However, the turning point for her was when she auditioned for the first time in middle school. The final question was a request for the members to show their aegyo. Hayoung hilariously parodies Justin Bieber’s baby and performed the gwiyomi song, evoking squeals and giggles from the audience. Apink has been known for their pure and innocent images. However, from the Q&A, Apink reveal their down-to-earth and appealing personalities, showcasing different sides of them.
As the Q&A came to an end, the concert proceeded into two back to back performances with ‘A Wonderful Love‘ and ‘Secret.’ With both songs being ballads, the group delivered emotional performances with them, tugging at the heartstrings of the crowd with their soothing voices. During the performance, three fangirls located in the back made hearts to the members. Bomi and Hayoung saw them and returned a heart. As international K-Pop fans, it can be a struggle to grasp an idol’s attention. However, when it does happen, it feels truly amazing!
The girls, then, took a break, and the guest performers were introduced to the audience. Yours Truly is a K-pop Dance Cover group based in Vancouver. They won a dance cover contest and was then invited to perform. Covering a medley of Apink’s hit tracks, Yours Truly delivered a great performance while Apink took a break and changed into new outfits.
When Apink got back on stage, the crowd was in awe at their all-white outfits. While fans were expecting another performance, the MC appeared on stage and brought out two boxes. It was a pleasant surprise for fans as a game was prepared for Apink. They were split into two teams, the unnie team and the dongsaeng team. There was a mystery item in each box, and the teams had 15 seconds to feel the object and guess what it was. The unnie team, who won the game, had a jar of maple syrup in their box, which they guessed correctly almost immediately. The dongsaeng team had a hockey puck in their box. Prior to the show, the audience had a raffle ticket in which they had a chance to guess which team would win the game. If they guessed it correctly, then their raffle ticket would be placed in a draw where many prizes were given away.
The members exploded with energy during the next three performances, ‘My My‘, ‘You You‘, and ‘No No No.’ The 10 songs that they performed drew cheers and applauses from the audience. Before the concert came to an end, the girls thanked their fans for their love and support. The members revealed that it was their first time in Vancouver, and that even though Vancouver is colder than South Korea, they cutely explained how their fan’s cheers and screams warmed their hearts. Chorong revealed that she memorized a lot of English and stated, “We will miss you so much, and we will never forget today.”
Pink Pandas went all out during their very last performance for ‘LUV.’ The concert ended on a sweet and refreshing note. It was a memorable night. The sincerity and emotions that they poured out in every song left an indelible impression on me. The concert finally came to a close as the girls thanked their fans and bowed, promising that “we will be back, very soon!”
