Showcasing a new style, INFINITE H has successfully exploded onto the k-pop scene with their debut, making their way onto all the main music portals and topping charts.
The main 7-member group INFINITE is known for their synchronised dance moves, however INFINITE H has a more of a carefree and comfortable charm. They recently sat down for an interview with ‘Asia Today’.
Ever since debut, Dongwoo and Hoya both have had an aspiration to do hip-hop, they both promised each other that “one day, let’s do hip-hop music“. Finally, they have fulfilled that dream.
“Both of us liked hip-hop from the very start, that’s what sparked the dream of becoming singers. The two of us have always gotten along well and we’ve always danced together. We really didn’t expect for the reaction to INFINITE H to be so great. We believe that it’s because the other songs on the album are also good and that’s the reason why many people have listened. Some of the INFINITE members expressed their interest in being featured in some of the songs. But that takes away the true meaning of being a ‘unit’ so we had to turn them down (laughing).”
Their mini-album ‘Fly High’ symbolises wings which represents flying and the freedom flying allows one to do. The title single, ‘Special Girl’ showcases the talented rapping and melodious singing of R&B artist ‘Bumkey’.
When asked about what the title song meant, they replied,
“The song is about a guy who hasn’t confessed his feelings to the one he likes and is just imagining it. I think there are some similarities with us (laughing). Maybe it’s because of INFINITE’s image that many people thought that we’d come back with a strong single, but we wanted to surprise everyone with a sweet song like ‘Special Girl’. The relatable lyrics and easy melody are the song’s strong points.”
The music video is about the two members in love with a girl, causing an uproar by fans. Hoya has already had his try in acting from his role in ‘Reply 1997’ however it was Dongwoo’s first time in the acting side of entertainment.
Dongwoo revealed,
“After this opportunity, I’ve even had thoughts of trying my hand in acting, if I can find a part that fits me.
The dramatic filming adds a new twist to the music video. We set a new record with the filming of the video. It was supposed to take four days to film, but we didn’t have enough time, so we ended up completing the filming in just one day. We started at 9 AM and ended at 4 PM the next day. It was really tiring, working for 30 hours straight, but it was a lot of fun (laughing).”
The two members stated that they found it difficult and hard at first to break out of their normal k-pop style and branch out into hip hop. There was a lot of pressure, as it was common for idol dance singers who try out hip-hop to be shot down by the public.
However, with the aid of ‘Primary’, ‘Dynamic Duo’, and DJ Wagon who are already established hip-hop producers and experienced in the industry, their mini-album promotions were definitely otherwise. INFINITE H was a success and left fans aching for more.
“Before we started working on the album, we were really worried that hip-hop fans would not appreciate the album, but after we began, all of our worries vanished. Working with our amazing hip-hop sunbaenims helped throw away our doubts. Dynamic Duo had even more energy than we, as idols, do in the recording studio. They write lyrics on the spot, and they even told us to try saying anything in the recording studio. Some of those things even went into the album… It was truly a lot of fun.”
When the interviewer challenged the two boys with a question asking whether they enjoyed promoting with INFINITE or as INFINITE H, they both replied indecisively, “We can’t even decide.”
They then continued,
“It’s because the charms of the two groups are completely different, which is what we like. INFINITE is charismatic with their synchronized dance moves, while INFINITE H is a more carefree and unadulterated side to us. When we were performing ‘Special Girl’, I realized how many possible gestures and moves there are. I never thought the day that we do ‘aegyo’ on stage would come (laughing). We want to become a unit that brings a smile to the faces of people who watch us.”
