YG rapper, PSY‘s “Gentleman” music video was released to the world waiting for his next move, and it didn’t disappoint. PSY highlights childhood pranks, but delivers them in a comedic way that has a wide range of appeal.
In the video, PSY plays a prankster that terrorizes women until he meets a lady who can challenge him; Brown Eyed Girls,’ Ga In.
In addition to her sex appeal and charisma that we all know her for, Ga In brings something else to the “Gentleman”; the ‘Arrogant Dance.’
In 2009, “Abracadabra” was a nationwide craze upon its debut, and is considered one of the most iconic dance moves in K-Pop, catapulting BEG into the spotlight. After the success of their third full-length album, “Abracadabra”, the ladies began working on solo activities.
Narsha was the first to release a solo album, and released her single “I’m In Love” on her debut album, “NARSHA.” Narsha’s next single from the album was, “Bbi Ri Bba Bba” is an outlandish song with an even more outlandish video.
Member JeA had collaborated with Rattpoom, the Thai singer for his song, “Face to Face“. Soon after, she came out with the popular ballad, “Because You Sting” featuring G.O. of MBLAQ.
Gain also started her solo career off with “Step 2/4,” and released her first solo single, “Irreversible“. Her tango-inspired “Irreversible”, featuring the unique sounds of the accordion put her at the top of the charts, and she even won an Inkigayo award that October.
In 2011, The Brown Eyed Girls came together after their two-year break with a full-length album titled “Hot Shot.”
The first single released off the album was titled “Sixth Sense.” The song and music video topped all the major music charts in Korea. It didn’t just focus on singing and dancing, as many other songs do. The concept for both the song and album were very impressive, giving off dark feelings of resistance.
The girls followed this up with “Cleansing Cream.” The song is much softer and refined than the previous song, “Sixth Sense.” “Cleansing Cream” talks about heartbreak. The lyrics and video to represent that makeup can hide blemishes (inside or out), but can’t heal them.
After their final stage performance of “Cleansing Cream” in 2011, the Brown Eyed Girls separated once again to pursue solo activities.
Miryo came out with her album, “MIRYO a.k.a. JOHONEY.” Unfortunately, her album was banned from broadcasting stations. Her song “Revenger” had lyrics that depicted violence, and the song “Dirty” was criticized for offensive language to disabled people. Miryo had to change lyrics to appear on music shows.
In October of 2012, Ga In released her second mini album titled, “Talk About S“, featuring the title track, “Bloom.” The song hit #1 almost instantly, and had won the top spot in M! Countdown.
After Ga In’s “Bloom,” JeA went on to release her solo track, “Let’s Hug“. It hit No. 1 on the real-time music charts. The release from her solo album “Just JeA” earlier in 2013 showcased her production skills; JeA had produced her entire album herself.
Ga In released a duet album this month with former ‘Birth Of A Great Star‘ contestant Jo Hyung Woo, named, “Romantic Spring.” The album is full of beautiful, love songs.
LOEN Entertainment commented on the album, stating, “Ga In’s new album is packed with warm emotional songs just in time for spring. We ask for your love and support for Ga In who will show new charms through this album.”
Ga In may have shown a softer side in her new album, but showed her diversity by jumping right back into her charismatic persona we know and love her for in PSY’s “Gentleman” MV.
BEG aren’t afraid to tackle mature themes that aren’t really found elsewhere in the K-Pop scene, and portray female sexuality in a less traditional and girly way, but rather a powerful and mature image.
Out of all the talented ladies in the group, the one with the most widespread solo success has been Ga In. Fearless in addressing mature themes, as seen in “Bloom,” and her success as a solo artist has proved that she was great as the ideal choice for PSY’s leading lady in “Gentleman.”
It’s no wonder that Ga In was chosen to perform with Psy on the world stage.
