Berry Good had me thinking that I was watching the closing credits to a ‘slice of life’ style anime with their new comeback song, “Because Of You.” This style of song is different than most in K-Pop, and while I do wish that they had put a little more power into their voices, I thought the softer style suited the group.
Most of the time I don’t really enjoy “sing talking” in songs, but I thought it was great as a response in the call and response section, and I could slip past it in the “rap” section. The instrumentals never overpowered the girls, which was surprising considering how softly they were singing. Altogether, a pleasing sound coming from these rookies.
The music video was shot on location, in what appears to be Thailand based on the architecture. I like that the company chose to shoot the video in a natural setting, having the girls dance on the beach and adding in parts of what must have been their hotel, like the pool, hotel room, pagoda and the forest section. They did a good job of making me feel like I was actually with them on the vacation, even with the giant plug for Expedia, although I would have done a little more work with the lighting in certain areas. The styling was also very fresh, and they made the stars look like they were wearing natural clothing and minimal make up.
In the comments of the video, I noticed that many fans were displeased with the song, since three of the members had been changed. I compared this song to their debut song “Love Letter,” and I found the two sounds to be the same in the fundamentals, only differing in the tempo and the amount of bass, as well as being a little vocally powerful. Many fans seem to be mad at the company for the lack of explanation with the member switch. I hope that member switch won’t overshadow how lovely this song is in the fans’ minds.
