Janice Min, who leads Billboard and the Hollywood Reporter, attended the “MU:CON Seoul 2014,” in which she delivered a speech and shared her thoughts on the future of the K-Pop industry.
According to her, this industry will need to approach the fans more. “K-pop is the perfect 360-degree expression of entertainment right now. It has dance, singing, fashion, beauty, it’s all packaged so well that it makes it incredibly appealing to anyone in the YouTube generation.”
Min fears that the K-Pop groups will end up having the same problem that boy bands had in America: after a while, the performances and music videos “felt all too manufactured,” and the fans didn’t feel like they were watching their real idols, only a product of the music industry.
She added, “For authenticity, you need to feel like these artists are passionate about music, that they write their own songs and that it’s true artistic expression.”
Min also commented on how much K-Pop has been growing during the past few years. She mentioned the deaths of EunB and and RiSe from Ladies’ Code, which affected fans on a worldwide scale. “You have no idea how huge that was in the U.S. It was the top-read story on the Billboard website for days“.
It’s cool to see her opinion because Min is not only the chief of Billboard and Hollywood Reporter, but she’s also a second-generation Korean-American, which gives her a good background with K-Pop and knowledge to support her claims.
What are your opinions about the future of K-Pop? It’s true that it has been growing a lot, specially after the release of “Gangnam Style,” but will it hold it like this,or even grow more after so many tragedies, rumors, and break-ups? Share your thoughts below.
