With all the attention that Girls Generation is receiving for winning the first ever Video Of The Year Award at the First Annual YouTube Music Awards it’s no surprise that they are seeing a spike in the number of views on their YouTube videos.
The winning video, “I Got A Boy,” by Girls Generation received over 86,000 views on the day of the award show, November 3rd. That’s more than the 50,000 views it receives on an average day. However, the next day the video received 141,000 more views, a much more exciting number. One would think that a video, which is almost a year old, receiving at least 25,000 views a day is impressive. But perhaps the most amazing number is that the video “saw an increase of viewership by 327% over the previous five days.” Yes Kpop fans, not 25%, not 50% and not even a measly 100%, but there was a staggering 327% increase in views!
So considering all the attention, Billboard decided to give new fans a list of the “Top 5 Girls Generation Videos You Should See.”
Coming in at their number 5 is “The Boys.” Billboard points out the song “showcased a mature, high fashion concept” as well difficult choreography. And regardless of the level of technicality in the dance the girls looked totally in sync. They also complimented the girls on their looks, saying it ranged from “Disney princess chic to Soho fashionista.” There is also an English and Korean version of the song. Check them both out here.
Number 4 is “Hoot.” This time Billboard has caught on to the fact that our girls “love playing dress up.” They mention that the dance for “Hoot” is “some of the band’s most fun dancing to date.” This of course is no surprise to Kpop fans. We know numerous Kpop idols that have tried doing the famous “bow and arrow” move. Check out the “Hoot” video here and take a look at other idols’ interpretations.
Placing third is “Oh.” The girls go crazy “in the most colorful dorm room ever” according to Billboard, before breaking out their cheerleader-inspired choreography. Billboard also mentions that even though Girls Generation consist of 9 performers, the group never looks “cramped in its formations.” Personally, you should also check out “Run Devil Run” which has a storyline connection to “Oh.” Both videos are linked below.
We’re almost to number 1, but first we need to talk about number 2! Billboard named “Genie” as the 2nd top video you should watch, and it will probably be hard to find a Kpop fan who disagrees. Probably the girls most well known stage outfits and still one of their fan favorites, the girls “showcased their slender legs in army- and air force-inspired costumes.” Billboard also feels that the videography for “Genie” is a drastic improvement compared to their earlier videos, marking it as as turning point for the girls. If you’re still new to Kpop you may have missed out on some particularly famous covers of Girls Generation’s songs. One of my favorites was for SBS and featured some interesting idols. Check out both the Girls Generation and Boys Generation versions below.
Drum roll please…
The number 1 Girls Generation video that you should watch belongs to…
“Gee“!
It may not be their debut song but most Kpop fans will agree that it was “Gee” that gave the girls some much needed promotion. Before PSY’s “Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman,” “Gee” was the most viewed Kpop video ever. It still holds the title of being the only non-PSY K-pop video to earn more than 100 million views. It’s not hard to understand how the song became the hit it is with it’s cute and colorful video and ever so addictive chorus. I came across a very special video to go with this list. It’s the live performance of “Gee” and the girls first win! Check it all out below.
So what do you think of the list? Are they in the correct order? Are there any videos missing?
