On March 12th, BLACKPINK’s Rosé made her highly anticipated solo debut with her title track music video for ‘On The Ground’. The track comes from her first single album, succinctly titled, ‘R’. Check the MV out down below!
Prior to her solo drop, the artist sat down with YouTube’s music countdown news platform, Released, where she discussed the meaning behind the single. Stating that rather than a song about love, the lyrics talk about finding your meaning or purpose in life; that when things are on a roll, we often forget about what’s most important to us and we can find what we need within us rather than from outside influences.
Grounded within the pop rock genre, the English sung track begins with a strummed guitar to show off the vocalist’s unique vocal color before it transitions into a deep bass drop that introduces us to the chorus. This acts as a contrast to the other song on the single album, ‘Gone’, which settles into its folk pop roots with a relaxed yet sorrowful feel in its lyrics and sound.
Watching the MV, we see a variety of outfits, all with equal degrees of flare. A floor length black and pink dress gives a nice nod to her group as cars blow up in the background to create a desolate atmosphere. Travelling back to her past to find her younger self playing the piano, her older self reflects back to those days. However, the music video quickly transitions to its finale of her being lifted from the ground, signifying that she has found her purpose and success, on a rose covered field.
