Earlier this month, a great ripple of excitement went through SEVENTEEN‘s fandom at the news of the debut of SEVENTEEN‘s very first special sub-unit BSS. And on March 21, BSS made their fantastic debut with the digital single ‘Just Do It‘.
Check out their debut MV below!
BSS consists of SEVENTEEN‘s Vocal Unit members DK and Seungkwan, and Performance Unit‘s leader Hoshi. The members together were seen as the gag trio of fans due to their never-ending antics. Since the comic sides of the boys’ cheerful personalities show to the fullest when they are together, the trio was popular much before SEVENTEEN‘s debut.
Owing largely to their reputation as fun-loving boys, fans had predicted that the sub-unit would go for a bouncy and lighthearted concept for their debut. And obviously, the prediction has come true. ‘Just Do It‘ is an funky track with groovy beats that makes you want to jump up and down out of excitement right from the start.
The background instrumentals of the track consists largely of guitar riff, much like SEVENTEEN‘s ‘Clap‘. However, while ‘Clap‘ took a purist approach of focusing only on the guitar , ‘Just do it‘ is musically more diverse. Unlike in ‘Clap‘, the strong rock guitar strums were nicely counterbalanced by parts where the music faded to minimal synth sounds.
However, the extremely upbeat song conveyed a weighty and encouraging message. The lyrics tells you not to hide yourself in the crowd. If there is anything you would like to do, you should ‘just do it’ without any hesitation. All three members of BSS wrote the lyrics along with SEVENTEEN member Woozi. He also was one of the three composers who wrote this song.
The music video of ‘Just Do It‘ is basically a performance video of BSS in their 2nd fan meeting ‘CARATLAND‘ this year, where the then unofficial sub-unit performed the song in front of an audience for the first time. The choreography is just as full of spirited energy as the song as well as the members themselves are. And BSS did an absolutely wonderful job in making the stage as entertaining as humanly possible.
With their official debut as a sub-unit, Seungkwan, Hoshi and DK are exploring outside their designated roles within their group SEVENTEEN. Hoshi, who is primarily a vocalist and a dancer, has taken to rapping more extensively. Seungkwan, who always strictly stuck to just utilizing his abilities as a vocalist, took a timid step forward by rapping for the first time. Meanwhile, DK astonished everyone by taking on the responsibilities of being the leader of BSS. It is heartwarming to see the members venturing outside their comfort zones to showcase their talents to fans.
BSS also had their first music show appearances today on Show Champion and M Countdown today.
