With each comeback, the expectation and hype surrounding BTS grows, and thankfully this track sees them up to the task of meeting that expectation.
The style of ‘DNA‘ steers away from the current crop of tropical house influenced tracks and stays true to the sounds of classic K-Pop. It does however, take its cues from EDM – the synth and electronica instrumental breaks which drive the beat of the song are what distinguishes this track from anything that the group has done before.
The hip-hop elements which have always been a strong suite for BTS are still front and centre and the vocals from both Jungkook and Jin are flawless. But it’s the instrumental breakdown which combines spiralling electronica with the autotuned refrain that make this song the powerhouse that it is.
The choreography in the music video is as we have come to expect from BTS – next level. The group have commented that the choreography for DNA is some of the most intricate and complex they have undertaken to date. Make sure you are watching the MV at 3.05 when they turn themselves into a human DNA strand!

‘DNA‘ takes the group in a new direction musically from their previous releases. It’s a big call to make when they are still so early in their career (relatively speaking) but, at this point it seems that BTS have almost transcended the label of ‘K-pop’ and moved into the realms of global artists – think the likes of Psy and Big Bang.
If they are able to manage the shift, it will place them in a unique position to become not only ambassadors of ‘K-pop’, but influencers in a genre that could potentially suffer from being classified as ‘quirky’.
