On May 25th, 2008, boy group SHINee burst onto the K-pop scene with their debut performance of their first single, “Replay” (Noona Neomu Yeppeo).” Their smooth R&B vocals swept the ladies off their feet, and members Onew, Key, Taemin, Minho, and Jonghyun have been making their mark on the industry ever since.
The “Replay” mini-album peaked at number 8 on the charts and started the incline of the group’s popularity, which would continue to rise year after year. SHINee’s first full album, The SHINee World, peaked at number 3, thanks to the success of lead single, “Love Like Oxygen.” SHINee also began to become recognizable by their fashion style, starting the “SHINee trend” by sporting skinny jeans and signature bright colors. “SHINee World” was also released in a re-package, featuring title single “A.Mi.Go.”
2009 brought SHINee’s second mini album in May, “Romeo,” featuring the single and music video “Juliette,” as well as mini-album “Year of Us” later in October. Lead single “Ring Ding Dong” saw huge success, peaking at #1 on the Gaon chart and gaining them their first “Popularity” award at the Golden Disk Awards. July of 2010 brought us the full album “Lucifer,” and the boys amazed us with the intricate dance moves for the title track of the same name. This album was repackaged as “Hello,” the title track featuring a new music video. Their first SHINee World concert series began that year as well, leading into 2011.
The boys began to promote in Japan as well, releasing their first Japanese album, “The First,” which featured many of their popular songs in the new language. 2012 began the first Japan Arena Tour, as well as a new mini-album, “Sherlock,” in May. The title track of the same name showed a new concept, and the single and music video became one of their most recognizable. The SHINee World II concert began in June and toured all over Asia, and the boys continued to have successful Japanese releases throughout the year.
Last year, 2013, was their busiest year yet! February brought the release of album “Chapter 1: Dream Girl- Misconceptions of You,” followed shortly thereafter in April by “Chapter 2- Why So Serious?-Misconceptions of Me.” A new Japanese album, “Boys Meet U,” hit the shelves in June and brought with it a second dome tour. A repackage of the Misconceptions albums was released in the form of “Misconceptions of Us,” with new songs added. October brought the “Everybody” mini album, with title tracks “Everybody” and “Symptoms” putting the boys on the map once again. The boys saw the fruits of their labor at the Melon Music Awards, winning Artist of the Year, their biggest award to date.
This year, SHINee has been concentrating on their SHINee World III tour, getting the opportunity to tour Latin America for the first time, as well as perform in Indonesia and all over Asia. On May 19th, it was revealed that a new Japanese single, “Lucky Star,” will be released on June 25th.
Check out some highlights of SHINee’s music as we celebrate six years with this dynamic and talented group. We can’t see what the boys have in store for us for the next six years, and beyond!
