Upcoming jazz artist Choyoung released her new single album ‘What is Your Color?’ as well as the music video for the title track on August 3.
This neo-soul song is soothing and easy to listen to. Choyoung has a voice that is sweet and captivating. She does not belt as if she is trying to prove something. She uses her voice and style to tell a story. In ‘What is Your Color?’, Choyoung is definitely telling a story, and the video helps with her endeavor.
On the surface, the song and video seem ambiguous. However, after watching the video several times, I came to the conclusion that Choyoung’s question about color is a question about identity.
In the video, we see Choyoung walking around an abandoned property that is littered with debris. I believe the debris represents how the influences of the world can tarnish something that was beautiful to begin with. In this case, a person who relies on the superficial validation from others can lose themselves and forget their true, beautiful identity.
Notice the 3D glasses scattered around a television and the lack of focus throughout the video:
This imagery conveys the tragic reality of the effect media has on people. Perfection is something that is impossible to grasp, but it is something that is longed for. The glasses on the ground represent people who refuse to look at themselves clearly and instead rely on the media to tell them what they should be.
Perhaps Choyoung struggled with trying to find her ‘color’ in life and has fought with the desire to conform to what the world says she “should” be. The video has a depressing undertone, but thankfully the story does not end here.
Choyoung ceases to wonder around aimlessly when she discovered an old piano.
She is intrigued by the piano as if it had chosen her for a purpose.
In the end, Choyoung realizes her color, which is that of a musician. Sometimes, we have to sift through the debris of the world to discover our color. Just know that you are not alone, for people of all ages and from all backgrounds are still trying to find their color!
This is simply my interpretation of her song. I am curious to know your interpretation of the song and video! Tell me in the comments below!
