On November 30th, girl group CIGNATURE released the music video to their newest title track, ‘Boyfriend’. This comes off their simultaneously released 2nd mini album, ‘Dear Diary Moment’. This release marks two special occasions. Firstly, this marks their return in over a year; their last release was back in September 2020 with their first EP, ‘Listen and Speak’ and boisterous lead single, ‘Arisong’. Secondly, this is the first comeback with new members Chloe and Dohee, and without the departed members, Ye Ah and Sunhee.
The lyrics here have the girl group tell the story of terrible experiences with a bad boyfriend. Its melancholy and simple instrumental helps push out this message. Compared to the trends, the track is remarkably chill and doesn’t contain much flare till the bridge. This subdued atmosphere though makes it stand out against the rest, which is well needed since the group debuted in 2020 and have had such a long break between their comebacks. Initial sales seem to prove it’s worked. With their former release selling just shy of 500 copies on their 1st day, this new release has smashed it selling 2,716 copies.

CIGNATURE ‘BOYFRIEND’ MV:
It marks a huge departure from their previous sound which couldn’t be much more different than this transformed form. With loud synths and cute flourishes from tracks like ‘Nun Nu Na Na’ and the aforementioned ‘Arisong’, the group used to take the extreme in the other direction being unique with their lively charms. As the members have matured though, this new sound seems fitting for the septet and can mark a new start.
Watching the music video, the girls vent their frustrations with an unresponsive and annoying boyfriend. This balances between light filled white sets and the darker moodier sets. The white dresses with lace gloves once again contrast with the black dresses. This meets in between with grey street inspired outfits with which they all perform the choreography. The dance routine looks easy to follow with its arm and leg movements, complimenting the easy listening beat of the track.
