Roy Kim’s agency, CJ E&M Music, finally came forward to release an official statement on the plagiarism controversy surrounding the songs “BOM BOM BOM” and Acoustic Rain‘s “Love Is Canon.”
Roy Kim’s agency stated, “This is an original song that was co-composed by Roy Kim and Bae Young Kyung, and arranged by Jung Ji Chan and Kim Sung Yoon. All of the composers and arrangers that participated in this song have never listened to Acoustic Rain’s ‘Love Is Canon’. Prior to the controversy, we never knew about the singer’s name and song. If we did, we would’ve checked first.”
“After officially confirming with the Korea Copyright Commission, the ukulele version of ‘Love Is Canon’ was revealed to have been registered on May 15th, 2013, after Roy Kim’s ‘BOM BOM BOM’s release on April 22nd, 2013. Thus, Roy Kim’s ‘BOM BOM BOM’ does not have anything to do with that version.”
In regards to the original version of ‘Love is Canon’ registered in March of 2012, the agency commented, “Experts have examined the parts that are said to match between the original version [of ‘Love is Canon’] registered in March 2012 and ‘BOM BOM BOM’, and decided that there is no plagiarism.”
They concluded, “As the person who sang, wrote, and composed the song, Roy Kim has been hurt that a controversy has risen, while at the same time also feels a heavy sense of responsibility. He will be more careful in his speech and actions and will continue to strive forward with his music in the future.”
