YG Entertainment along with their artist CL lately have been facing a ton of heat for her solo “MTBD (Mental BreakDown)” which is off 2NE1‘s second full-length album ‘CRUSH’. It has not only sparked controversy but has raised a huge debate and disorder within the fandom. It has even been reported the dynamic leader has received death threats as well as telling the artist she would burn in hell among other things due to the songs content.
Those of Muslim religion had demanded the song be either removed from all digital stores or be edited so it wouldn’t contain the part part in which contains veer from the Q’uran. Most notable on the 2NE1’s Official YouTube channel they posted a live performance of CL performing her solo which gained a lot of attention from observers where the verse can be heard. A formal complaint from the Korean Muslim Federation emerged stating,“Muslims find this song to be a severe insult and are demanding for the agency to take action including quickly removing it or editing the entire song, and apologizing to Muslims.”
Also warning YG Entertainment of the possible consequences, “In the case that they don’t comply to the demand, we will take action with the Muslims around the world who find this to be a serious matter.”
Since then the video containing her performance has been taken down and a new video has been uploaded with song being re-edited which you can watch below.
While the musical content is still in the heat of discussion many feel that this is the norm on the music scene, artist like Shakira have been known to use arabic music in her past albums, a lot with Christianity and most famously Catholicism such as Madonna, Signead O’Connor and Christina Aguilera. What is your take on the scandal?
