The male idol groups are certainly taking the industry by storm, with more experienced artists taking over countries overseas and new groups reigning domestically. Dispatch, based on music scores, album sales, music show wins, fan cafe member amounts, and gauging YouTube and iTunes popularity, chose the top boy groups for 2013.
The twelve boys of EXO proved themselves to be power rookies as they topped the chart, selling the Korean version of their first album ‘XOXO‘ over 240,000 copies, wining first place. Their YouTube views show their popularity overseas, as the “Growl” MV has over 14 million views, winning first again. Their song was first on iTunes in Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia, tying them in second place with labelmates SHINee.
The five boys of SHINee showed impressive stats, releasing ‘Dream Girl‘ in February and selling over 180,000 copies, putting them second. SHINee came in third for their YouTube views for the “Dream Girl” MV, at around 8.6 million. Their song “Why So Serious?” topped iTunes charts in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
INFINITE received lots of love in Korea this year, as they won second for music shows, winning once on ‘Music Core,’ twice on ‘Inkigayo‘ and ‘Music Bank.’ However, internationally, they are lukewarm, with their “Destiny” MV at around 4.6 million views, making the boys come in seventh. Nevertheless, the boys receive lots of love all over the world as they experienced on their world tour.
2PM are quite the representatives of K-pop overseas, as”Grown” topped iTunes music charts, snagging the number one in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, and Taiwan.
