As the K-pop industry rapidly increases, media outlet Dispatch ranked out the top girl groups in 2013, in terms of album sales, music scores on digital charts, YouTube popularity, music show wins, fan cafe vastness, and iTunes popularity.
To nobody’s surprise, Girls’ Generation reigned the charts, with their score triple of second place’s.
Girls’ Generation and their hit release “I Got A Boy” garnered an amazing total of 1,194 points, and the track itself ranked 3rd in the music score category. International fans showed lots of love by flooding the YouTube views, giving the girls a total of 709 points, with around 70 million views. They successfully sold 290,000 copies of their fourth album ‘I Got A Boy’ and held 21 events, 31 pictorials, and 25 advertisements.
The girls of SISTAR are keen about giving fans a great summer, as after releasing last year’s summer hits, they came back with “Give it To Me” in July of 2013, winning twice on ‘Inkigayo‘ and ‘Music Core‘ and thrice on ‘Music Bank.’ The track came in 2nd in the music score category. However, the girls got fifth as they did not promote much in terms of events, pictorials, and CFs.
Following close behind are the girls of f(x), who made a splash this summer with their second album ‘Pink Tape.’ The album, selling at 70,000 copies, was 2nd in the category, almost double of 3rd place. They showed popularity overseas as they topped iTunes charts in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Cambodia.
This April, the girls of 4minute turned heads with their flashy fourth mini-album ‘What’s Your Name.’ They totaled 104 million points on Gaon Charts, coming in first place for music score category. While they didn’t show much progress in overseas iTunes charts, they had a high number of fan cafe members domestically. Members Gayoon and HyunA raised the group total as they participated in six solo events and four CFs respectively. The group got fourth place for YouTube views (~ 12 million) and fifth place for music sales (~ 14,000 copies).
Despite their short promotions, the power quartet 2NE1 and their track “Falling in Love” was number one on seven different countries’ iTunes charts: Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, and Hong Kong. They got second place for YouTube points (134) with a total of 13 million views. Domestically, they had low scores and did not sell any albums. They came in ninth for promotions, with only nine pictorials and three CFs. Nevertheless, their 78,000 something fan cafe members put them second.
