Inspired by the life of famed Korean gold medalist Jang Mi Ran, ‘Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo‘ follows two students at a sports college. Twenty year old Kim Bok Joo (Lee Sung Kyung) has always had a knack for weightlifting which was inspired by her father. Her entire focus has always been about weightlifting, until a strange encounter with swimmer Jung Joon Hyung (Nam Joo Hyuk) sparks something in her. Joon Hyung deals with a trauma that prevents him from winning competitions and forces him to go into ‘false starts’. The drama follows the struggles of young athletes and trauma, as well as first love.
Lee Jong Suk also made a special cameo appearance! His cameo included multiple references to his hit series ‘W‘ including it’s famous OST playing as they introduced him, a reference to sharp shooter Kang Chul, and a reference to Kang Ki Young‘s (who plays Sung Kyung’s uncle and a struggling actor in this drama) character in ‘W’.
This is one of the cutest dramas, the sparks fly almost immediately with Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk. I have to say I am slightly biased as these are two of my favorite actors since ‘Cheese In The Trap,‘ but it’s amazing watching them be leads. Although it’s very out of character for Sung Kyung, who is known as a stick thin beautiful model, the way she adapts to become Bok Joo is absolutely brilliant. It’s a complete 180 from the other characters she has played, whereas she’s not meant to be a pure beauty but rather an awkward girl learning to love. Joo Hyuk has definitely stepped up from the tame role as Baek Ah in ‘Scarlet Heart: Ryeo‘, although still lovable there’s something different about this character. Having been in the same drama and label mates, I think helped Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk. Although they didn’t interact in character a lot in ‘CITT’ from the looks of their Instagrams, the two are definitely close which just adds more to the story.
Obviously it’s a 10/10, I highly recommend this drama. The leads have a chemistry I’ve never seen before and in just the first episode I’m squealing in delight!
