EXO‘s sub-unit EXO-CBX has made it’s return with the release of their comeback album ‘Blooming Day‘ and the title track of the same name.
EXO-CBX is made up of EXO members Baekhyun, Chen and Xiumin. It offers the three of them a chance to shine away from the rest of the members of EXO and explore a solid funk sound.
‘Blooming Day‘ is a funky synth-laden dance-pop track that is filled with R&B vocals all laid down over a pounding house beat! How’s that for a potential clash of styles!
However, there is no clash here – the track shows off the same uptempo charms of EXO-CBX‘s past material as it grooves along in its relaxed funk vibe. The verses are slinky and vibrant and sit comfortably with the instrumental that thumps along with interjections of bass and deep house electronica, these purely addictive beats mesh seamlessly into the chorus of the track. The seemingly simple arrangement provides the perfect canvas to allow the trio’s vocals to shine.
My favourite parts of the song are Chen‘s soaring belts, and the swaying hook where EXO-CBX ask, “Can I be your boyfriend, can I?”. Of course, there’s also the crooning “ooh baby“s to get your heart pounding.
The song was written for the trip by a team of writers, including; Steve Manovski, Jenson Vaughan, Caroline Ailin, JRDN and Yoo Young Jin.
The music video is colour-blocked and filled with flower-decorated sets for the trio to wander and dance through. It’s playful and charming, much like the song itself. The trio perform the dynamic and high-energy choreography with a troupe of back-up dancers in tow.
