EXO has finally made their highly anticipated return to the KPOP scene with ‘Call Me Baby‘!
After the rumors, teasers, and the leaked audio, the guys are back and they don’t seemed to have lost a step. But before we begin let me just say I for one am glad this was not in fact called “Call Me Daddy’. While yes, that title does aid in the writing of fan fictions, had this video had a title like that, I don’t think I could take the music video seriously.
In case you’ve not seen them, here are both versions of the video for your viewing pleasure.
Korean Version
Mandarin Version
The first thing that I love about this song , music video and this new and yes improved EXO is the fact there was no EXO-K or EXO-M, like there was in the beginning, just EXO and I like that. After the sudden abandonment by two members, the remaining guys have come together to form the strong super-group that is totally deserves all the hype surrounding them.
EXO-L‘s get ready be cause your bias is totally going to get some screen time in the music video. No more quick glances of Xiunmin, Chen ,Tao, Sehun, and Chanyeol, nope plenty of eye candy to go around here in this music video.
I also liked the fact that it was not the D.O and Baekhyun show with their 8 back up singers as has often been the case. Everyone got a change to show off their talents both as singers and as dancers. What I want to see now is a dance version of this music video . EXO is known for having some of the best dancers in KPOP and I feel like the dancing we actually got to see was too little to really let us appreciate that fact.
There is one thing that is bugging me about this song and music video; the feeling that something is missing. We were told this song and music video were going to out do both ‘Growl‘ and ‘Overdose‘ and I am not sure it does at least not to me anyways. Do you think it did?
I have always felt this way about EXO there is always something missing. They have the everything needed but when it come to the songs that get made into music videos they either get a great music video and mediocre song or a great song and a snooze worthy music video. Their best songs sit on the album and don’t get the attention they should, which seems to be the case with ‘Exodus‘. While it is irritating, it is one of the hallmarks of SM and is something that the guys have less than zero control over.
In short this is an okay song and passable music video. In my opinion it is not the best of 2015 so far, not by a long-shot. But the year is still young and I have confidence that EXO will just continue to get better and better.
