THE RETURN OF THE FRIEND SYNDROME
After making two movies that didn’t quite sky rocket to fame, Director Kwak Kyung-taek made a film about 4 childhood friends and their lives as a reflection of his own experiences growing up in Busan. This film was action packed, R-rated and full of violence, and yet, his movie for ‘Friends’ became one of the biggest domestic movies of all time in Korea. There were over 8.2 million admission counted and a surge of what is called, “Friend Syndrome”, which in turn, brought Director Kwak’s cinema skills into the spotlight he deserves.
Just 12 years after the amazing movie was released, Director Kwak is at it again with a sequel, “Friend 2: The Legacy.” He says that the story for this movie came to him on his way traveling to the Busan International Film Festival a few years ago. His epiphany lead him to write almost the entire script during the festival. It is said that “Friends 2” gives way to a richer picture of the two main protagonists of the original film. Having proven it’s immediate success, “Friends 2” quenches the audience’s thirst about the characters while issuing a new point of view in history of gangster film-dom.
