On December 28th, Fuse TV wrote an article about the expansion of K-pop in the U.S.
The staff compiled a list of this year’s most significant crossover moments made by K-pop artists. They mentioned Girls’ Generation‘s American television debut with an appearance on ‘Late Show with David Letterman’, Wonder Girls’ TeenNick movie collaboration, ‘Wonder Girls at the Apollo’ and their song with Akon – ‘Like Money’.
They also wrote about Big Bang‘s huge popularity all over the world proved by the ‘Best Worldwide Act‘ award the group has won at last year’s MTV European Music Awards. Fuse TV didn’t forget about 2NE1′s big achievements, such as MTV Iggy‘s “Best New Band in the World” award, their concert at Times Square’s Best Buy Theater and their collaboration with will.i.am.
We all have to admit, that the growing popularity of K-pop in the U.S. is mostly possible thanks to PSY‘s ‘Gangnam Style‘. Fuse TV has also mentioned this phenomenon and wrote: “Thanks to Psy, the K-pop movement went from hiding in the shadows to moving front and center. And the best part of it all? No one saw it coming.”
Another sign of Korean Wave in the U.S is the KCON: “America’s ‘first-ever large scale convention’ dedicated solely to Korean pop culture and entertainment. This full-day event, held Oct. 13 in Los Angeles, featured meet and greets, fan activities and a star-studded concert. Nothing like KCON has ever been organized stateside before this year.”
