On September 3rd, Mnet aired the 5th episode of its current idol survival show, ‘Girls Planet 999’. Out of the 99 girls competing (comprising of 33 of Korean, Japanese and Chinese descent respectively: labelled as the K, J and C group), this episode saw the first ranking announcement. With the girls arranged in cells, of 1 from each nation, out of the 33 cells formed, only the top 17 made it passed this round. In addition, we found out the top 9 individual contestants whom received the highest number of votes (split 50% from South Korea and 50% International). The final group will consist of a 9-member lineup.
Find out who made the top 9 below!
‘GIRLS PLANET 999’ TOP 9 REVEAL:
- Kawaguchi Yurina
2. Shen Xiaoting
3. Ezaki Hikaru
4. Choi Yujin
5. Sakamoto Mashiro
6. Su Ruiqi
7. Cai Bing
8. Kang Yeseo
9. Kim Chaehyun
Apart from these reveals, the show also featured a token called the ‘Planet Pass’. 3 contestants, 1 from each nationality who would otherwise have been eliminated would be saved by the judges based on a variety of criteria. The 3 that were saved are as follows:
Kim Hyerim (K-Group)
Ikema Ruan (J-Group)
Wen Zhe (C-Group)
The second round of voting has already opened and will close on September 17th. Voters need to pick their 3 favourite contestants from each group and can vote once per day. From here, the next elimination will see the bottom 10 ranked within each group eliminated. This will leave 30 girls in the third round. Based on the episode teaser, it looks like next week’s episode will begin a “Combination mission”. This is likely a combination to showcase and test each one’s vocal, rap and dance abilities.
‘Girls Planet 999’ airs weekly on Fridays 8:20PM KST. It is currently livestreamed with English subtitles on the Mnet‘s official YouTube channel. Past episodes can be viewed on the streaming platform IQIYI.
