Go Yong Wook, a TV personality, has been sentenced to five years in jail for the rape and molestation of minors, becoming the first celebrity in Korea to face being electronically tagged as a sex offender.
A district court in Seoul found him guilty of molesting a 13 year old girl in December of 2012, another 13 year old twice back in 2010, and the rape of a 17 year old girl that same year.
Some doctors seem to think that he isn’t a pedophile but rather that he has a behavioral addiction, “considering that his victims were not children”.
A Psychiatrist by the name of Lee In Soo has said that Go had molested a 13 year old at the time of his first investigation attests to the theory.
Behavioral addiction does not rely on alcohol or drugs, but rather things like gambling, sex, food, shopping, and various other types of behavior.
Lee said that, “People like TV personalities and politicians, who live in the spotlight and often do not have time to look back on their emotions can fall victim to behavioral addiction.”
Psychiatrists have said that the addiction is hard to cure whether it involves any type of drug or behavior, since there may already be some neural wiring.
Choi Sam-wook at Eulji University Hospital in Gangnam says that, “The most important thing in treating addictions is to diagnose the problem at an early stage and get professional counseling and treatment, it looks like Go failed to recognize at an earlier stage that he has a problem.”
