Fantastically beautiful and witty song and concept for a music video!
These are few words I could describe the music video and especially the comeback title track of Loen Entertainment‘s IU, “Twenty-Three” for her 4th mini-album, “CHAT-SHIRE” released last October 23, 2015 at midnight. It was worth the wait and I know, most Uaenas celebrated the much-awaited comeback of IU with teasers blowing off their minds, not to mention, their souls.
The music video started with her walking towards the table with a cake on it and a “23” candle of course(as shown from her 4th teaser). After taking a taste from it, it’s as if a poisonous apple making IU plant her face onto it, again, somehow similar to what happened to “Snow White,” except IU here didn’t fall to a deep slumber and waits for that kiss from a sweet prince. Just a heads up, it’s not for the weak of heart, and it’s kind of explicit and suggestive, so better watch it with adults.
The song started with a funky and disco-like instrumental tune that makes you want to roll your shoulders to it, especially when it reaches the chorus part where it totally transformed to an upbeat dance anthem for everyone to enjoy to. Listening to the song alone was a priceless moment for every IU fan, but becomes more epic and memorable if you get to watch the whole music video and reading the lyrics.
But what makes this one of a kind is how the lyrics were simple, easy to relate, and not to mention witty. It’s as if taking all the negatives comments and criticisms thrown against IU but taking all these to her advantage. Now, talking about the music video, IU wakes up and started asking “I’m twenty three, I’m a riddle (Question)” addressing all people who hate her or love her.
In the chorus, I see IU as the “Cheshire Cat“, asking certain questions whether she will act nice or naughty, be in love or just make money, and be cute or be sexy.
The concept for the music video is wonderfully done, like a masterpiece, and totally fit for IU’s image. I tell you, it’s one magical wonderland! A concept inspired from the famous 1951 Disney animated version of “Alice in Wonderland” also inspired from the books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland“, its sequel “Through the Looking-Glass“, poems “Jabberwocky” and “The Hunting of the Snark” by the world renowned writer, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson also known as Lewis Caroll. Full of psychedelic colors, tantalizing imagery and not to mention different versions of IU all in one music video!
Now, time to follow that white rabbit and enter the rabbit hole and watch this magnificent masterpiece from IU!
To conclude everything, it is really inspiring to watch and know how IU grew from a timid girl to someone genuine this through her songs. It’s not a song for those people who judge her or hate her, but rather, a song that promotes anti-bullying. IU makes us choose whatever image we want to see of her, but also tells us that she’s only human and can’t please everyone. It’s one music video worth watching over and over again, and must be included in your playlists.
The whole 4th mini-album “CHAT-SHIRE” includes seven tracks “Shoes”, “Zeze”, “Twenty-three”, “Blue”( or The Shower), “Red Queen” ft. Zion.T, “Knee” and “Glasses”. Physical albums includes 2 bonus tracks “Heart” and “23” from the KBS2‘s hit South Korean Drama series, “The Producer“. She will also be holding a a national concert tour at the Olympic Park, Olympic Hall in Seoul on November 21st and 22nd, followed by Busan, Daegu and Gwangju as part of its album launch campaign for her 4th mini-album “CHAT-SHIRE”.
In addition to this, “Twenty-three” topped local music charts, placing it in no.1 spots just hours after its digital release last Friday. The album’s title track was No. 1 on Melon, Genie, Mnet.com and five other music charts, as of 7:30 a.m. Three other songs on the album — “The Shower,” “Shoes” and “Glasses” — were also among the top 10.
