Acclaimed female soloist IU has finally made her return with her newest title track, ‘Lilac’. With its music video uploaded on March 26th, the song comes off her long awaited 5th full album that shares the same name. Check out the MV down below!
Listening to the coveted song, it fits within the City-Pop inspired retro sound. Its upbeat nature and light airy vocals make the shimmering track perfectly refreshing for the Spring season arriving in South Korea. Interestingly, the song utilises a snippet from the second verse of her 2010 hit ‘Good Day’.
With lyrics likening the ending of a relationship with the colour lilac and blooming period of the year, the song and album also represents the artist’s goodbye to her 20s (being currently 29 in Korean age) as she soon enters her 30s in the coming years. With her previous EP or full album work set in 2019 with ‘Love Poem’, following her trend this will likely be the last of this kind of length of album before turning 30 which will again wave another shift in the songstress’ music.
Watching the MV, we see the singer arrive at a train station waiting for transport to board. A timetable board hung on the wall shows various platforms marking the different albums she has spawned throughout her career along with their respective release dates since 2012. Entering the bright carriage, she is greeted by everyone as they follow on in unison as part of choreography. The dance routine is shown quite prevalently, in contrast to most prior tunes with the singer herself now happily performing the dance with lilac adorned backup dancers. We soon see her in the middle of a club party. Wearing an expensive black bedazzled dress, she parties it up before the MV cuts to her with a bandaged arm fighting goons that come towards her way. Fighting them off, it snips again to an artful animated scene of a person opening a box labelled as a time capsule. Placing glasses into the box, she buries it under a tree before celebrating.
Back to the train, as confetti explodes throughout, she swiftly gets off the train. Left on a non-lit platform, the conductor waves her farewell as she expectantly looks at the light of another incoming the station.
The full album contains a total of 10 tracks all penned by the singer-songwriter, along with the pre-released electropop single, ‘Celebrity’. Upon its release, all the songs are currently charting within the top 50 on the Melon 24Hits Chart. Its 3rd track, ‘Coin’ is also listed as a title track. Its MV teaser was already uploaded before the vocalist’s return so a full MV should be arriving in the coming future. Unlike many comebacks, she has confirmed she will be promoting her album on music shows this time. Hence, this marks her music show return in almost 4 years, with the last being her previous 4th full album effort, ‘Palette’.
IU’s 5th full album, ‘Lilac’ with the identically named title track is available now. How do you feel about the soloist’s comeback track and full album? Let us know in the comments below!
