Jay Chou sparked a heated discussion for his remark on Psy‘s “Gangnam Style” and K-pop in general.
In his acceptance speech for an award presented to him, he remarked, “Although Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ is hilarious, Chinese music is better. Please don’t be overtaken by the Hallyu wave, all artists must unite and don’t “Gangnam Style” anymore. As for fans, please support your artists and keep it on without changing your heart.”
Interestingly, Jay sported a blonde while accepting the award, a look that closely resembles 2PM‘s Wooyoung. Jay Chou received the Most Popular Male Artist from a Chinese portal site Baidu.
Jay has dismissed allegations that he dyed his hair to imitate K-pop artist. Instead, he answered, “I dyed a a blonde to match my killer abs.”
In the midst of this controversy, Chinese Music Awards publicity director and music critic Youview stepped in and responded, “There is no conflict in supporting Chinese music and following Korean music. Isn’t Jay Chou’s Chinese music influenced by American R&B and Hip Hop? We have to ‘take’ in order to ‘produce’.”
His acceptance speech sparked a heated debate among netizens, some came to his defense and said, “Jay Chou did not say about curbing K-pop, it’s just a misinterpretation”, “Good songs has no national boundaries, musically inclined people will appreciate them no matter what, why talk about curbing?” while others criticized Jay Chou for being a “sourgrape”.
