On May 31st, RED VELVET‘s JOY made her solo debut with her title track and MV, ‘Hello’. Accompanying the track, she simultaneously dropped her special album of the same name. The album is a covers album, consisting of remakes of popular singers such as Hey, As One, Sung Sikyung, Kwon Jinwon and Toy. Check out the music video down below!
JOY ‘HELLO’ MV:
Fans of older Korean music may recognise the track as it is a remake of singer Park Hye Kyeong‘s 2003 single of the same Korean name (안녕 ‘annyeong’ can both mean ‘Hello’ and ‘Goodbye’). The lyrics wishes listeners to forget and say goodbye to their sad and lonely days, and instead say hello to new mornings and beginnings. With the bright brassy instrumental, the song matches well with the vocalist’s happy spring-like timbre. Collectively, it makes for a package perfectly packed for the incoming Summer in Korea. Reception has been extremely positive, with her album topping the iTunes charts in 26 countries around the globe. The lead single topped the local Genie music chart, and furthermore is currently charting within the top 20 of all music streaming charts in the country.
Watching the music video, it starts off relatable as we see the girl group member wake up on the floor with a mess around her living room. After tirelessly cleaning up, she then sets off her on the road in her van, driving under the sunny skies. She bumps into a girl stranded on the road, looking lost. Holding a crayon drawing in her hand, she wants to return to her family.
The remainder of the music video is full of wholesome feel-goodness as the two quest around the area to find her parents. Asking the locals of the whereabouts the location in the drawing is, they then partake in mediating, bonfire shenanigans, and even pick up a dog along the way. After a couple of days, the MV comes to a close as the two find the little girl’s parents. Hugging her mum tightly, we see the girl look sadly towards the singer as their journey ends. However, in the final shot, we see the dog they trekked with has joined the girl’s family.
JOY‘s special album, ‘Hello’ featuring the identically named lead track, is available now.
