Ahead of his Fort Worth show as part of his 2023 “Still Blue” North American Tour, Officially Kmusic sat down with GEMINI for a quick chat.
Q: If you could choose one of your songs to listen to on repeat, which would it be, and why?
I would choose ‘Sweet Life’ by Frank Ocean. If it had to be one of my songs I would say “Love is Banned.” “Love is Banned” is about not being in love, and for me right now, work is more important, so I feel like I can relate more.
Q: You’ve collaborated with so many talented artists! Which experience was the most memorable or motivational for you, and for what reason?
Jay Park. When I first started doing music, he was the artist of my dreams, so collaborating with him felt special and exciting.
Q: In your GQ Essentials interview, we noticed you had some key skin and wellness products! Can you tell us about your skincare routine and some of your favorite ways to do self-care?
I don’t really have a routine, I do it more to relieve stress. It’s not skin care, but I use this brand called “Just” at home and in the studio when I’m stressed.
Q: Your family seem to have been a strong support for you as you’ve gone through your musical career. Do you ever get to involve them in your creative progress?
My parents have mainly encouraged me, saying “you can do it!” and supporting me this way.
Q: Some fans have referred to your work as an overall “aesthetic,” from the creative design elements of your music videos to the soft and groovy vibes from hits like “Do Me Right” and “She lives in Paris.” Was this always the intention for your sound, or how long did it take you to feel comfortable in your current style?
It was definitely intentional. I made music like this because I wanted to create “chill music,” and as I kept making music, I think the songs just came that way.
Q: “MIA” is one of your most melodic releases, with the tone and lyrics wrapping your mind in loops as the chorus plays and really holds the listener. You recently released the live version of “Love is Banned” + “Bad,” which really feels like an escapism’s dream. Do you feel like you found an escape through creating music, or that music led you somewhere where you feel more at home?
I felt more at home when I started making music. These songs can feel like an escape, but after I finish making them, I feel more comforted when listening to them.
Q: You’ve been featured in DAZED Korea, recently attended Paris Fashion Week, and we’ve even seen you sporting Mitsuya Kakashi’s look on Instagram in the past. Would you say your fashion is inspired by any anime/trends currently?
I wear clothes like how the designer intended them to be worn. I don’t wear them as a result of trends or inspirations. I like brands like Amiri.
Q: To wrap up today’s interview, is there anything you’d like to share or promote that’s coming up soon for our audience?
I’m currently working on an album and some good new songs, so look forward to it! Even though I’m here in Texas [at the time of the interview], I think the rest of the tour will continue to be fun!
Special thank you to Unbound Entertainment and GEMINI’s team for allowing us the time for the interview!
