Melbourne Korean Week Festival 2017 was held at Queen’s Bridge Square with a special event held. In particular, there was a 2017 K-Pop world festival regional competition with 14 dance crews and singers competing for the number one spot. First off, the different dance crews had dance rehearsals in which got the crowd hyped and ready for the real competition!
All the teams performed amazingly and chose songs that were popular in K-pop industry. The show started off with BE-7 who performed ‘BTS’s Fire’. Even though it was the first act they didn’t lose their focus and showed off their amazing yet fast choreography, not disappointing anyone with this cover. The next group to perform was E^2 who did a cover of MAMAMOO’s ‘uh oh ah yeah’. They showed off their powerful vocals and showed their amazing talent.
The following group, the sense CREW, did a remix between Rihanna’s ‘B*tch Better Have My Money‘ and Black Pink’s ‘Playing With Fire‘. Even though they are quite different in melody, the group did a great mashup of the two bringing together a magnificent and powerful dance choreography. Theodora showed off her amazing vocals with ‘I’ll Go To You like the First Snow’ by Ailee and showed that she too can bring the chills to any one whose watching and listening.
2to5 Crew brought a charming stage by mashing up ‘Good Boy‘ by GD and Taeyang and ‘Daddy‘ by Psy. No one thought it could be possible to put the two together, but the group effortlessly show that it does work well, especially with the dance choreography. Whereas Jen and Kim did a medley of many songs!
KM United and BYS did an amazing three track mashup of songs with two different themes. KM United went with VIXX‘s ‘Fantasy‘, Dreamcatcher‘s ‘Chase Me‘and EXO‘s ‘Monster‘. It was a dark track which fits amazingly with their dark outfits. Whereas, BYS went with a more hip hop track with a mashup of BTS’ ‘21st Century Girl‘ and ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ with Black Pink’s ‘Boombayah‘.
MINT is back on our stage with SNSD‘s ‘Into The New World’ and brought their own rendition of this. It was amazing to watch and see how one makes the track their own. Pulse Dance Crew and Hustle have brought the roof down with such hip hop tracks. Pulse Dance Crew performed BTS’ ‘Not Today‘, having fans screaming their hearts out at the track. Whereas, Hustle went for a mashup between GOT7’s ‘Hard Carry‘ and IOI‘s ‘Whattaman’.
Lace Dance Crew did an unexpected mashup between Black Pink’s ‘Whistle‘ and Kara’s ‘Mama Mia‘. The girls made the mashup work and showed their great choreography. P4pero dance did a cover of Black Pink’s ‘Playing With Fire’. Their moves are just so powerful, anyone watching will be in awe.
Lastly, AO Crew ended the competition with their cover of ‘Blood Sweat And Tears’ by BTS. They brought a sexy and charming performance. This has the crowd going wild for this.
So many great performances on the night, it sure was difficult for the judges to decide on one act. So while the judges were calculating the scores, members from different groups had come together to give the audience an amazing treat. They had performed TWICE‘s ‘Cheer Up‘ but once it was over it was time to announce the winner for Melbourne’s regional competition for 2017.
There was four prizes to give away: the popularity award, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. The popularity award went to Jen and Kim. 3rd place went to BYS and 2nd place went to Pulse Dance Crew.
Lastly, 1st place went to AO Crew. They were absolutely ecstatic that they won! This would mean that they have the chance to be selected to represent Australia at 2017 k-pop world festival in Korea. How exciting is that?
Officially Kmusic would like to congratulate all the winners and good luck to everyone! Everyone did such an amazing job and definitely has the audience awed and amazed! Also, we would like to thank the crew for organizing such an amazing event and we are privileged to get the opportunity to attend and have fun!
