Last week, Officially Kmusic had the great honor of interviewing the talented Paul Kim. Fans and people who enjoy a soulful sound can expect great works from him, as his songs have even been recognized by artists such as BTS’ Rapmonster. Paul auditioned for MBC’s Star Audition and consequently launched his career with his single, “커피 한 잔 할래요” under Neuron Music in 2014. His 2nd mini-album “Her” has captured the hearts of Korea and hopefully, the voice of this gifted singer and songwriter spreads all over the world.
As a singer-songwriter, where do you get your main inspirations from?
“The reason I started being a singer was because Lee Sora. But I mainly listen to Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Michael Buble as well as Red Velvet since I came to LA!”
Have any artists caught your attention or are there any you would like to work with?
“I would love to work with DEAN and G-Dragon. I usually sing and produce a lot of medium tempo ballads so I want to work with more Hiphop and trendy artists.”
What can fans expect from you for future work?
“The music I do isn’t too crazy or loud and it is really soothing music. The songs are easy to listen to while doing something else and is something that makes them calm. I would want to try super crazy rock or rap!”
What was your experience on MBC Star Audition like?
“It was my first audition in Korea since deciding to be a singer and it was crazy. All of these people meet up on the same day so it was hard for me to get along with everyone. And so I ended up getting close with people who felt the same way – people who didn’t try too hard to get along with others. I still hang out with one of them from the group! All I remember was I cried so much!”
What is your favorite song from your 2nd mini album ‘Her’?
“Actually my favorite song out of everything is the 4th track, “이별.” I wrote this song a few years ago at this cafe I used to work for that closed down. This song meant a lot to me cuz I moved from Japan to New Zealand and had to say goodbye to friends a lot. I always wanted me to become someone strong enough to handle goodbyes. It’s just about basic emotions that people can relate to.”
I heard you’re currently in the States, what are some foods that you’ve loved so far?
“In LA, I had In-N-Out this morning. The first time I came, my CEO took me there and I was like ‘What’s so special?’ and the next day I was missing it a lot and I love the french fries! I think I’ve been to Starbucks everyday because it’s everywhere. The Vietnamese noodles are a lot better here as there’s more flavor. The American Starbucks tastes better. I’m actually allergic to dairy so I order the latte with soy! The ones in America taste less bitter and the smell is stronger!”
Are there any other places you would like to visit?
“I want to go to San Diego because I have a cousin. I haven’t been to Las Vegas yet. New York!! Maybe I’ll book another ticket to LA! My first time in the U.S. was 15 years ago and I’m currently having a lot of fun in LA.”
What is your motto or fave quote?
“Be positive and creative!”
What is one thing you can’t live without or three things you would bring to a deserted island?
“Music is the one thing I can’t live without! On the island, I would bring a knife, a torch….and my iPhone because I listen to music every second of every day!”
