INTERVIEW:
[KMUSIC] : Transitioning into a Solo Artist, what are some newer challenges you’re facing?
[SUBIN] : Working in a group and as a single artist is very different. I had to practice my singing a lot and I exercised with Pilates and swimming to improve my basic physical strength. My first solo stage was in Los Angeles and I wanted to sync well with the band, so I practiced very much. I also studied English prior so that I could converse with my English fans.
[KMUSIC] : Out of everything, what was the most important thing to focus on when you transitioned?
[SUBIN] : Skills are very important. Solo artists need to have a basic ability, that is the most important thing for me. It is equally important to research and create an identity for yourself as an artist.
[KMUSIC] : We know that you’re learning English on the side, is that one of the things you were most excited about doing?
[SUBIN] :I really wanted to master English. English is the standard language for communication with many people, so I wanted to learn completely. If possible, I’d love to learn other different languages, but for now I will study English often to communicate with you all. Other than languages, I want to learn how to play more instruments! I currently have basic piano and guitar skills, but I want to take lessons to become more professional. Recently, I’ve become interested in the cello, mostly because I really enjoy Orchestral music.
[KMUSIC] : You’re getting acting lessons on top of all the things you’re already doing. What takes higher priority in your life, singing or acting?
[SUBIN] : A lot of people ask me, “acting or singing, what is more difficult” but I think they are connected to each other on the same level. For a singing career, you need a positive stage presence and emotional ability, for acting you need these same skills. Because of this, both require you to continuously learn and grow as they go hand in hand.
[KMUSIC] : People who know about the Korean industry know it’s very hard to start know. What practices did you do to stay positive and what advice do you have for those starting out?
[SUBIN] : I’ve been in this industry a long time and I found it really difficult to have independence. Truly, I loved singing, acting, and dancing but I didn’t sincerely focus on what I really wanted to do with myself. For those who want to pursue this career, learn to love and develop yourself. I want to tell you the most important thing is to focus on what you really enjoy.
[KMUSIC] : When people discuss your music, it invokes a lot of emotions in them. Was it difficult to cultivate this sound now as a solo artist, or was it harder to have your own style while in a group?
[SUBIN] : I was inspired to create a lot of styles when I began my solo career. Rather than books or movies, I am inspired by my everyday life. I try to take walks outside for small motivations. When walking and listening to music, I can clear my mind and let the music sink in. The happy expressions on those around help me to compose my music. My solo album wasn’t difficult because I only needed to let out those inspirations I was feeling. In a group setting, I have other members, so I need to work with a team to fit everyones preferences. However, my fellow members helped me to stand and become this way.
[KMUSIC] : What do you have to tell those at Officially Kmusic about what is in store for you?
[SUBIN] : Officially Kmusic! This is my first interview with Officially Kmusic. Even though this interview is in South Korea, it will be seen internationally so I am excited, my heart is fluttering! Please look forward to my album and I will continue to support Officially Kmusic. Please enjoy this interview, as well as me and my music.
We would like to thank Subin for giving us this opportunity to give her excited fans an exclusive update on her life before the release of her solo album! Please continue to follow the main accounts of Subin for additional updates and information.
