HENRY LAU is a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, and actor based in South Korea and China. He is also known for being part of SM Entertainments’ boy group Super Junior-M.
This is Henry’s first time in Australia for his appearance at SONICA Music Festival in Melbourne. In this interview, we talked about what he’s looking forward to doing in Melbourne, his new songs, and his collaborations.
Henry! How’s it going?
Henry: “G’day mate, g’day mate. I learn that from the driver on the way here. He said there’s a lot of nice expresso cafes, I love coffee. This is my first time in Australia, never been here.”
What are you looking forward to doing in Melbourne?
Henry: “Definitely the show tomorrow (Sonica Music Festival), looking forward to that. Excited to see and look around, I’ve never been here. So far I love the weather, it’s just right. It’s not too cold, it’s not hot, it’s perfect. Would love to see a kangaroo and a koala and check out the zoo”
Congratulations on your new release ‘Real Love Still Exists’. Can you tell us the inspiration?
Henry: “It’s a very romantic song. When I was writing it, I was imagining Paris, I don’t know why, I was just imagining Paris and then everything just lined up. We actually shot the music video and it came out beautiful in Paris. It was a dream come true.”
You got Yuna to collaborate on the track, tell us a bit about that collaboration.
Henry: “I was a big fan of her music from years back. I have this morning playlist and a nighttime playlist and one of her songs called ‘Crushed’, that song was on my morning playlist and my night playlist, it just works both ways and I’ve been listening to that for years and years. After this song came out, I thought “oh she would be perfect for this song” and one thing lead to another and we just ended up doing it together. Her voice is beautiful.”
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Henry: “So many. I heard that *starts singing* “Oh my god I see the way you shine”, she’s Australian right? She’s amazing, she has a really amazing voice.”
You’ve been known to be multilingual, when you get the inspiration to write music, which language do you prefer to sing in?
Henry: “It’s funny cause every language sings differently. Some melodies just work very well with say English. Some melodies that if you sang it in English, it wouldn’t fit very well but if you sang it in say Chinese or Korean, it would fit very well. It’s different for every song.”
“For example, I have this one song called ‘I Luv You’, the melody goes like *sings the melody in Korean* but if you sang that in English it goes like *sings “I would be the one to love you”*, it just sounds kind of cheesy. But if you put it in Korean it works very well, it’s different for every song.”
Who inspired you to move into music?
Henry: “Definitely my mum. She’s the one that forced me to practice, every day, screaming at me, you know how it is right? Forcing you to practice and stuff. At that time I hated it but now it’s like oh she should’ve screamed at me more.”
What’s installed this year and what can fans expect?
Henry: “This year, starting tomorrow, there’s going to be the Sonica Music Festival, first time in Melbourne and hopefully in future, we can go to Sydney or anywhere in Australia. I’m also going to be releasing a lot of new music and my album will be coming very soon with a lot of the new songs which you’ve heard. A lot of new songs. Hopefully, I can perform more and I’m planning something but I can’t say. And I can’t wait to meet everyone here in Melbourne tomorrow.”
Finally, do you have a message for Aussie fans?
Henry: “Thank you so much for having me here, this is my first time here. I don’t know what to expect but so far I love Melbourne, I love the vibes, I love the weather. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.”
KMUSIC would like to thank SuperDuper and Castiglione Arts and Culture who made this interview possible. We would like to wish Henry all the best on his future projects and look forward to him returning in the future!
