Following hip-hop duo LeeSsang’s successful sold-out Asia Showcase in Singapore last year, Kang Gary returned with his maiden solo showcase at the Kallang Theater on 24 Oct 2014.
“It’s my fifth time here!” exclaimed the rapper of LeeSsang, and co-star of the immensely popular Korean variety show Running Man. Joining Gary on this gig as guest performer is his Jungle Entertainment label mate Jung-In. The duo goes way back and enthralled fans with a refreshing 100-minute performance, including their chart topping collaboration ‘Your Scent’. With entertainer Gary, one can also expect the showcase was nothing short of top-notch fan service and laughter!
Decked in black and oozing with swag top to toe, Gary opened the show with ‘Zotto Molla’, ‘Shower Later‘ and the familiar tune of his theme song on Running Man – ‘You’re the Answer to a Guy Like Me’ before settling down for a chat.
Greeting the crowd affectionately, Gary went “Singapore, saranghamnida!” Having been to the sunny shores so many times, it seemed that apart from chili crabs, Gary had also mastered some local slang, “Last time when I was here, I learnt some Singlish – so shiok (awesome)?” which surprised many fans and eliciting heaps of laughter.
Teasing Gary, the host went on to teach Gary what to say when he sees pretty girls. Certainly an important word, Gary started practicing immediately but instead of ‘Chio’ (pretty), what came out of his mouth sounded like ‘Ji-hyo’! After a hilarious round of correction, Gary pointed at the laughing fans and jokingly quipped, “Singapore, chio chio chio! Korea, Ji-hyo! But if it’s not Monday, she doesn’t even look at me!”
Without his Running Man cast-mates or fellow music partner Gil, Gary looked a little lonesome on stage, but thoughtful Gary assured fans “at first I felt lonely today, but now I see you, I don’t feel lonely anymore. Even though I know it might be my first time meeting some of you… but I know we will have great fun tonight!”
Indeed it was great fun for fans who got to make up-close and precious memories with Gary. One lucky fan got serenaded by Gary when she asked for a birthday song since it fell on the concert day. Little did she know, when she asked, not only would Gary sang the song with his hands over her shoulder, she would also get a big hug!
Fans who played the games onstage also got autographed caps and polaroid photos with Gary. For those who did not get to the stage, playing the ‘heart-to-heart’ game to guess what Gary would choose between two options was also good fun. When asked to choose between ‘lion’ and ‘tiger’, mischievous Gary tickled funny bones when he steered clear from the latter since it reminded him of his hyung Jong Kook!
During the short break, a clip of Monday Couple‘s sweet moments on Running Man came on screen. Who would forget Gary’s bold kiss that landed Jihyo in utter surprise? But watching it on the big screen with over a thousand of fans was quite an experience!
Gary and Jung-In then went on to perform seven songs in a row, including ‘Bicycle‘, ‘Your Scent’ and the much loved track – ‘The Girl Who Can’t Break Up, The Boy Who Can’t Leave’.
Lamenting that the stage was too far away from the fans, Gary invited everyone to go to the front of the stage as the duo performed tracks ‘Shut Up’, ‘Drunken Night Tune’ and ‘Hard to be Humble’. Gary capped off the spectacular night on a high note with ‘Rush’ and fans’ fervent cheering as he made his rounds among them, including those at the back of the theater!
Let’s look forward to Gary’s next visit to Singapore with his Running Man co-cast in November 2014!
